The patron saint of Apollosa celebrated with a novena, procession, and lively evenings in the square
In Apollosa, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Benevento, Campania, the end of July has always been the most anticipated time of the year. The town celebrates Sant'Anna, its patron saint alongside Saint John the Baptist, with a festival that combines religious devotion and popular tradition. Sant'Anna, mother of the Virgin Mary, is invoked as the protector of mothers, expectant women, and families: a patronage that in Apollosa translates into specific liturgical acts, such as the blessing of expectant mothers and a mass dedicated to grandparents.
The festival follows the classic pattern of Sannio patronal feasts. In the days leading up to July 26th, the parish community prepares with a novena, rosaries, and daily celebrations dedicated to the saint. The patronal day, July 26th, is marked by a solemn morning mass and the solemn procession in the afternoon: the statue of Sant'Anna travels through the village streets accompanied by confraternities, a brass band, and hundreds of faithful, amidst hymns, prayers, and decorated balconies.
A particularly poignant moment is the handing over of the Keys of the Town to the patron saint by the Mayor during the solemn mass: a symbolic gesture that entrusts the civil community to the saint's protection, illustrating how deeply religious festivals and municipal identity remain intertwined in these villages.
Alongside the rituals, the festival comes alive with evenings in Piazza Pasquale Saponaro, the town's open-air living room, where concerts and shows are held. The program alternates between folk and Neapolitan music, traditional dance groups, and entertainment for children. The brass band remains the musical soul of the festival day: in 2026, the procession was accompanied by the «S. Cecilia» Band of Montesarchio, while the Saturday evening brought the Salento pizzica of the group Scazzicapieti to the square.
As in every Campanian patronal festival, the table is part of the celebration. Around the square and along the procession route, food stalls and stands line the streets, offering Sannio cuisine and artisanal sweets, alongside craft markets and small exhibits. The Apollosa territory is a land of olive trees, vineyards, grain, and legumes: products that naturally end up in the dishes served during the festivities, where people eat standing up, chatting with neighbors while waiting for the fireworks.
Situated at about 430 meters above sea level, at the foot of the Taburno-Camposauro massif and along the historic route of the Appian Way, Apollosa preserves the ruins of the ancient castle in the Terravecchia area and several churches of interest, including Santa Maria Assunta, San Giuseppe, and San Giovanni Battista, the latter located in the municipality's only hamlet, San Giovanni. The town borders directly with Benevento, Montesarchio, Ceppaloni, Castelpoto, Campoli del Monte Taburno, and San Leucio del Sannio: a position that makes the festival easily accessible from the entire Benevento basin.
The Sant'Anna Patronal Festival is not an event built for tourism: it is a village festival that continues to thrive because the community identifies with it. Those arriving in Apollosa during these days will find decorated streets, families on balconies, young people following the band, and, in the evening, a full square. It is the best way to understand how summer is experienced in the villages of Sannio, amidst devotion, music, and conviviality.
The full program is released every year via posters displayed in town and through the channels of the parish and the Municipality of Apollosa, usually a few weeks before the festival. Mass times, guest artist names, and fireworks schedules may vary from one edition to another: it is therefore always useful to check the official flyer before setting off.
In 2026, the festivities for Sant'Anna in Apollosa reached their peak between Friday, July 24th, and Sunday, July 26th, with the 26th — the liturgical day of the saint — serving as the focal point of the entire festival. The formula is the tried-and-tested one of Sannio patronal feasts: the liturgical part in the morning and afternoon, and the popular part in the evening, in Piazza Pasquale Saponaro.
Two events particularly characterized this edition: the blessing of expectant women, in honor of Sant'Anna's patronage over motherhood, and the mass dedicated to grandparents, celebrated on Saturday. On Sunday, during the 11:00 AM solemn mass, the Mayor handed over the Keys of the Town to the patron saint, a symbolic gesture that entrusts the community of Apollosa to her protection.
In the afternoon, the solemn procession, which began at 6:15 PM, traversed the village accompanied by the «S. Cecilia» Band of Montesarchio, and at 10:00 PM, the fireworks display closed the three days of celebration.
The heart of the 2026 festivities was concentrated on the weekend of July 24, 25, and 26, alternating liturgical celebrations and events in the square.
In the days immediately following, on July 27, 2026, also in Via P. Saponaro, Apollosa hosted a free concert by Gianni Fiorellino, as noted in the musical calendars of the Sannio region.
