Seven days of faith, tradition, and music in the village of Matinella, Albanella
The Sant'Anna Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Matinella, the populous village of the Municipality of Albanella, in the Province of Salerno, Campania. Every year, during the last week of July, this agricultural hamlet in the Piana del Sele transforms: street lights illuminate the roads, Piazza Sant'Anna becomes the community's open-air living room, and for seven days, moments of prayer, traditional games, family nights, and major concerts take place.
The festival stems from the devotion to Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary and patron saint of mothers and families. It is organized by the Sant'Anna Festival Committee, chaired by the parish priest Father Carlo Ciocca, along with dozens of volunteers. The event is entirely self-funded through donations from the faithful, local business sponsorships, and the historic Sant'Anna Lottery, the drawing of which symbolically concludes the festivities.
The most iconic moment of the festival is the Sfilata delle Cente. The cente are traditional votive structures, beautifully decorated, which devotees carry in procession as an ex-voto and a sign of gratitude to the Saint. This ancient gesture is passed down from generation to generation in Matinella, involving entire families in their preparation.
The procession begins at Corso Europa, winds through the town, reaches Piazza Sant'Anna, and concludes at the Church of San Gennaro. It is a moment of deep community identity, often drawing back Matinella natives who have emigrated but return specifically for the festival.
July 26th, the liturgical day dedicated to the Saint, is the religious heart of the week. The day opens with the Magliano and Altavilla Silentina Marching Band touring the streets of Matinella, a ritual that has always marked the mornings of festivities in Southern Italian towns.
In the evening, the solemn procession takes place with the venerated image of Saint Anne, accompanied by the prayers of the faithful along the town's streets. At midnight, the sky over Matinella lights up with the traditional fireworks display, another unmissable highlight of the patronal festival.
Alongside the religious dimension, the committee organizes a calendar of popular events every year that bring Piazza Sant'Anna to life from the first day to the last:
The festival always concludes with a major musical evening in Piazza Martiri del Lavoro, which in recent years has brought well-known names from the Italian scene to Matinella: in 2025, a concert by Anna Tatangelo, and in 2026, a performance by Le Vibrazioni, led by the voice of Francesco Sarcina, preceded by DJ sets from DDL and PhantomKey. At midnight, the drawing of the Sant'Anna Lottery takes place, the final act of seven days of celebration.
Matinella is located about five kilometers from the municipal seat of Albanella, in the heart of the Piana del Sele, the fertile plain between the Alburni Mountains and the sea, known for its buffalo, mozzarella, and intensive agriculture. We are at the gateway to the Cilento region and a short distance from the archaeological site of Paestum: those visiting this corner of Campania will find in the Sant'Anna Festival an opportunity to witness a living tradition, far from tourist circuits and truly experienced by the locals.
The Sant'Anna Festival Committee, chaired by Father Carlo Ciocca, created a full week-long calendar for 2026, from July 21 to 27, in the Matinella hamlet of the Municipality of Albanella (Province of Salerno, Campania). The opening, on July 21 at 9:00 PM in Piazza Sant'Anna, featured the lighting of the illuminations and the blessing of the traditional Panno di Sant'Anna, followed by the Summer Tombola.
The following days featured the Sant'Anna in Moto Rock motorcycle tour, prize games, the Baby Party, and the Tug of War, leading up to the two most cherished moments: the Sfilata delle Cente on July 25 and the solemn procession on Sunday, July 26, concluded at midnight by the fireworks display.
The grand finale on July 27 in Piazza Martiri del Lavoro, with the concert by Le Vibrazioni, drew thousands of people to Matinella from across the province. The event was supported by law enforcement, the Carabinieri, civil protection, and local municipal administrations. The event concluded with the drawing of the Sant'Anna Lottery, featuring six prizes.
9:00 PM, Piazza Sant'Anna: lighting of the illuminations and blessing of the traditional Panno di Sant'Anna, followed by the Summer Tombola with a surprise announced for attendees.
Sant'Anna in Moto Rock: motorcycle tour through the local area, blessing of the bikes, and a live concert by the Cico Russo 9.0 Band, with the support of Claudio D'Angelo.
La Fortuna, Gira!: prize game with the Wheel of Saint Anne in Piazza Sant'Anna.
Afternoon dedicated to children with the Baby Party (entertainment, games, workshops, and bouncy castles); in the evening, in Piazza Sant'Anna, the Tug of War team challenge.
Sfilata delle Cente: departure from Corso Europa, arrival in Piazza Sant'Anna, and conclusion at the Church of San Gennaro. Followed by a musical evening and karaoke in the square with the youth of the San Gennaro Oratory.
In the morning, the Magliano and Altavilla Silentina Marching Band tours the streets of Matinella. In the evening, the solemn procession with the venerated image of Saint Anne along the town's streets; at midnight, the traditional fireworks display. From 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM, the traffic plan is in effect with closures on Corso Europa, SP314, and SP316.
Grand finale in Piazza Martiri del Lavoro: DJ sets by DDL and PhantomKey, followed by the concert by Le Vibrazioni, featuring the voice of Francesco Sarcina. At midnight, the drawing of the Sant'Anna Lottery.
The events are concentrated in Matinella, a village in the Municipality of Albanella (Province of Salerno): Piazza Sant'Anna for games and popular evenings, the Church of San Gennaro for liturgical moments and the Sfilata delle Cente, and Piazza Martiri del Lavoro for the final concert.
Matinella can be reached by car via the provincial roads SP314 (via Giovanni XXIII) and SP316, which pass through the town; the center is about 5 km from the municipal seat of Albanella. The area is a short distance from Capaccio-Paestum and the Piana del Sele.
On peak evenings, and particularly for the procession on July 26th, the Municipality implements a traffic plan with parking bans and temporary closures on certain sections of Corso Europa, SP314, and SP316, as well as restrictions in Piazza Martiri del Lavoro. In 2026, restrictions were in effect from 7:00 PM to 2:00 AM, with alternative routes and guaranteed access for emergency vehicles and residents. It is advisable to leave your car in the outskirts of the town and reach the squares on foot.
Evenings start late, generally from 9:00 PM onwards: bring a light jacket for the night hours. Stands and activities are paid for on-site in cash. To support the festival, you can purchase tickets for the Sant'Anna Lottery, which are on sale in the preceding days.
