A thirty-year tradition in the heart of the Matese

The District Games of Sant'Angelo d'Alife have been the highlight of the village's summer for over three decades. Located in the municipality of Sant'Angelo d'Alife, in the province of Caserta, at the foot of the Matese massif, the event transforms the village's squares and streets into a massive collective playground for two weeks. It is one of the most authentic expressions of summer social life in inland Campania: no grand stages or big names, just an entire community coming together to participate.

This is not merely a series of summer events. The District Games are a true competition between the historic neighborhoods, with a score that builds day by day and concludes only with the final challenge. It is this competitive spirit, experienced with lightheartedness but without concessions, that makes the event so deeply felt by all residents, including those who have emigrated and plan their holidays specifically for these days.

The four competing districts

The challenge involves the four historic districts of the village, each with its own colors, symbols, and group of supporters:

• Melopiano
• Palluzza
• San Nicola
• San Michele

Each district prepares for months: representatives are chosen for various events, floats and sets are built for the opening parade, and costumes are sewn. It is a collective effort that builds, house by house, that neighborhood identity which remains in the background during the year and returns to the center of village life in August.

Traditional games, tournaments, and treasure hunt

The program alternates between skill tests, team challenges, and moments of pure fun. Over the years, the event has been built around several recurring pillars:

• traditional games of the past, the kind played in the square before the digital era;
• sports tournaments between the district teams;
• entertainment evenings open to all ages, with music and animation;
• the final treasure hunt, the event that assigns the decisive points and crowns the winning district.

The treasure hunt is the most anticipated moment: it takes place at night, through the village streets, and often overturns the standings built up over two weeks of competition.

The opening parade and the theme of the edition

The opening of the Games is marked by the parade of the four districts, designed each year around a shared theme. In 2025, for example, the choice fell on the Harry Potter universe: costumes, sets, and decorations transformed the town center into a fairy-tale path, followed in the evening by the White Night of Music. It is the moment when the village shows its best, and the preparation work of the districts finally becomes a public spectacle.

The Youth Forum, the engine of the event

The organization is entrusted to the Youth Forum of Sant'Angelo d'Alife, which manages the entire event with the support of the municipal administration, historically committed to providing public spaces, from the Palatenda on Via Roma to the Municipal Villa. It is a model of youth self-management that is quite rare in the small towns of the Caserta hinterland, and for this reason, it has been publicly praised many times: the District Games are a training ground for organization, responsibility, and, above all, a sense of community.

Sant'Angelo d'Alife, a village to discover

Sant'Angelo d'Alife has just over two thousand inhabitants and is located at an altitude of 385 meters, about 35 kilometers from Caserta and 60 from Naples, in a panoramic position on the slopes of the Matese. The territory houses the famous cave of San Michele Arcangelo, a destination for devotion for centuries, and the remains of the castle that dominates the town. Participating in the District Games also means discovering this corner of Campania outside traditional tourist circuits, among mountain landscapes, rustic cuisine, and genuine hospitality.

When the District Games take place

The event traditionally takes place in the second half of August and spans a couple of weeks, with almost daily appointments in the late afternoon and evening. The detailed calendar is released every year by the Youth Forum through its social channels, usually a few weeks before the start: those who want to witness the most spectacular events should follow them carefully from the beginning of the summer.
