The traditional fair of Fossombrone's patron saint, featuring crafts, flavors, and shopping
The Sant'Aldebrando Fair is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Fossombrone, a town in the province of Pesaro and Urbino nestled along the Metauro Valley, in the Marche region. The fair originated for the feast of the patron saint, Sant'Aldebrando, and for generations has transformed the historic center into a large open-air market that attracts visitors from all over the area.
Aldebrando was the bishop of Fossombrone in the Middle Ages and has been its patron saint for centuries. Tradition remembers him as a shepherd close to the less fortunate, committed to defending the weak; even today, he is invoked as a protector against illnesses and calamities. His liturgical feast day is May 1st, and the fair that bears his name takes place on the weekend before or around the date, keeping alive the connection between popular faith and community life.
The event traditionally spans two days. On Saturday, Corso Garibaldi, the commercial and social heart of the city, hosts a vibrant preview: a scattered market featuring local crafts, plants and flowers, food and wine products, and street food. Sunday is the main day, with the principal fair occupying Viale Cairoli and Viale della Repubblica from morning to evening, where dozens of street vendors offer local specialties, handcrafted items, clothing, and all sorts of curiosities.
More than just a market fair, the event is an opportunity to experience Fossombrone in celebration: a journey through tastes, traditions, and local products, where you can rediscover local excellences and stroll through the town's streets. The atmosphere is that of a convivial village fair, with families, curious visitors, and craft enthusiasts flocking to the historic center for the entire day.
The Sant'Aldebrando Fair is one of the most anticipated events of the spring season in Fossombrone and a wonderful way to discover the town, its historic streets, and the hospitality of the Metauro Valley.
