The festival that awakens spring with bells and joy in Druogno
In the small village of Druogno, in the Vigezzo Valley, the Sant'Albino Celebration coincides with a moment long-awaited by young and old alike: the Spring Awakening. It is one of those folk traditions that bring warmth to mountain villages, designed especially for children and families, capable of turning a Sunday in early March into a choral celebration that involves the entire community.
The heart of the event is a festive procession that starts from the Church Square and winds through the village streets. The instruction is simple and fun: dress in spring-themed outfits and bring along bells, cowbells, pots, and any object useful for making noise. This cheerful racket is not random but holds symbolic value: it serves to "wake up" spring after the long winter of the Vigezzo Valley, in a gesture rooted in the ancient peasant and alpine customs of the Ossola region.
Once the parade concludes, the joy moves to the parish cinetheater, where the party continues indoors. Here, the little ones find face painting, games, and music, alongside the charming parade of "flowery" children, adorned with the colors and flowers of the season. A snack is provided for all participants, a convivial moment that brings the day to a close.
The event takes place in the Municipality of Druogno, in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in the northernmost part of Piedmont, just a stone's throw from the Swiss border. Druogno is a village of Celtic origin known as the village of painters and for the parish church of San Silvestro: an authentic setting for a festival that has no commercial aspect and thrives on the commitment of the village's associations and volunteers.
Participation is free and based on a voluntary donation: the proceeds go to support the Druogno children's library, a project that unites the village festival with a concrete gesture for the community and for the new generations. It is this spirit of sharing, even more than the procession, that makes the Spring Awakening a deeply felt event throughout the Vigezzo Valley.
