The civic ceremony where San Donaci honors its citizens
Sandonacese Pride Day is the event where San Donaci, a town in the Province of Brindisi in the heart of Salento, pays tribute to citizens who have built successful paths while staying connected to their territory. It is not a food festival or a music event: it is a civic and cultural ceremony, a collective rite of gratitude where the community gathers to thank those who represent it with honor, both in Italy and abroad.
The event is promoted by the San Donaci Local Police Command in collaboration with the Municipal Administration. The event is ideally linked to the figure of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of the Local Police, and stems from the desire to publicly recognize individuals of human and professional depth who, despite often having studied or worked far away, have never severed their ties with their hometown.
Over the years, the Day has honored diverse profiles, reflecting the richness of the Sandonacese community: priests like Father Donato Panna, the Stigmatine sisters, teachers like Professor Antonio Pellegrino, magistrates like Judge Anna Lucia Zaurito, as well as doctors, educators, and institutional representatives. Each edition selects a category or symbolic figures, turning the ceremony into a living narrative of the town's recent history.
A central element of the event is the involvement of new generations. Students from the "Dante Alighieri" middle school are invited to attend and participate: the goal is to introduce young people to stories of commitment and success born right in their community, ensuring that pride in one's roots is passed down from generation to generation.
The setting is the solemn Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, in the historic center of San Donaci. The choice of location is not accidental: the mother church is the identity heart of the Salento village, the space where the community has always recognized itself and where this celebration of belonging finds its natural setting.
For those visiting the Brindisi area of Salento, Sandonacese Pride Day is an opportunity to discover the authentic face of a town that makes memory and gratitude a shared value. A great little example of how, in Puglia, community identity is still a heritage to be cultivated and celebrated.
The 2026 edition, the eighth of the event, focused on the wine sector, one of the industries that best represents San Donaci in the world. The ceremony, promoted by the Local Police Command together with the Municipal Administration, was held in the solemn setting of the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta and saw the participation of students from the "Dante Alighieri" middle school, who were invited to learn about stories of commitment and success born in their community.
