Three days of faith, music, and tradition in the village of Penne
In the village of Villa Degna, just outside Penne in the heart of the Abruzzo region, the festival honoring San Vincenzo Ferreri and Sant'Antonio di Padova is one of the most anticipated spring events. For three days in early May, the small community gathers around its patron saints in a celebration that weaves together devotion, folk tradition, and live entertainment.
The religious program marks the days with evening masses, culminating on Sunday with a solemn morning mass followed by a procession through the village streets, accompanied by the "Città di Picciano" Brass Band. Popular devotion to the two saints is rooted in the rural history of this corner of Abruzzo and remains a powerful moment of collective identity for the families of Villa Degna.
Alongside the religious program, the festival offers a rich secular schedule highlighted by the "La Stesa" Pasta Festival, which has become a local gastronomic landmark. It is the perfect opportunity to savor pasta prepared using the ancient "stesa" technique, a symbol of local cuisine and manual craftsmanship passed down through generations in Villa Degna. Every evening, food stalls serve traditional specialties from the Penne area.
The three evenings feature free-admission shows with diverse genres and atmospheres: from show orchestras to themed nights, tributes to great Italian music artists, and family-friendly entertainment. Fireworks, dance performances, and activities for children make the Villa Degna festival an event that unites multiple generations.
Organized by the S. Vincenzo and S. Antonio Association, the Villa Degna festival is much more than a religious celebration: it is a gathering place for the entire community of Penne and the many visitors who travel to this Abruzzo village every year to share three days of faith, good food, and joy.
