Floridia's devotion to the Glorious Martyr, featuring the 'svelata', the 'nudi', and the solemn procession
Every year, in the town of Floridia, in the province of Syracuse, the San Sebastiano Festival brings the entire community together for one of the most profound and well-attended events on the local calendar. The devotion of the people of Floridia to the Glorious Martyr dates back centuries: as early as the beginning of the 18th century, the population showed deep veneration for the Saint, whose statue is kept in the Church of Sant'Antonio di Padova, the beating heart of the festivities.
The festival opens with the traditional svelata (unveiling) of the statue, accompanied by hymns of glory, the prayers of the devotees, and the acclamations of the faithful. The protagonists of the rite are the so-called nudi: devotees dressed in white shirts and trousers with a red sash, who reach the church in the early hours of the morning amidst solemn bell ringing and firecracker blasts, in an atmosphere of intense popular spirituality.
The main day is January 20th, dedicated to the memory of the Glorious 'Bimartire'. Following a three-day preparation period of rosaries, holy masses, and blessings, and after the solemn Eucharistic celebration, the procession of the statue begins in the late afternoon from the Church of Sant'Antonio di Padova. The float travels through the main streets of Floridia's center, followed by local congregations and a large crowd of celebrating faithful, returning to the church in the evening to be welcomed by a fireworks display.
The bond between Floridia and its Saint does not end in January: on May 3rd, in the evening, a second spring unveiling takes place—a moment of reflection and celebration that brings the statue back to the center of the town's devotion in the heart of the Sicilian spring.
Organized by the Confraternita Gesù e Maria, the San Sebastiano Festival weaves together faith, identity, and folklore in an event that captures the most authentic soul of south-eastern Sicily. Between hymns, fireworks, and the white and red of the 'nudi', it is an opportunity to discover the popular traditions of a small yet significant town in the province of Syracuse, Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the San Sebastiano Festival in Floridia, in the province of Syracuse, confirmed the January 20th appointment with the main celebration: a preparation triduum, a solemn holy mass, and an afternoon procession of the statue from the Church of Sant'Antonio di Padova through the main city streets, with the evening return greeted by fireworks.
The spring unveiling was held on May 3rd, 2026, in the evening (9:15 PM), renewing the Floridia community's devotion to the Glorious 'Bimartire'. In 2026, the festival was again organized by the Confraternita Gesù e Maria, with the participation of local congregations and numerous faithful.
