About San Rocco in Valle Agricola

Every year in mid-August, Valle Agricola gathers around its protector for the San Rocco Patronal Festival. In this small village within the Matese Regional Park, in the province of Caserta, the day alternates between religious solemnity—with mass and a procession featuring the Saint's statue accompanied by a brass band—and the warmth of the town square festivities: food stalls, live music in Piazza XX Settembre, and fireworks that bring the celebrations to a close at midnight.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Matese

The San Rocco Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Valle Agricola, a village of just over eight hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 690 meters in the Matese Regional Park, in the most inland part of the province of Caserta. Here, Campania reveals a side far removed from coastal clichés: high-altitude pastures, beech forests, stone houses, and a community that, every year in mid-August, comes together to honor its patron saint.

Devotion to San Rocco

San Rocco, the pilgrim from Montpellier invoked for centuries against epidemics, is one of the most popular figures in Southern Italy, and in Valle Agricola, he has marked the summer calendar for generations. The festival maintains a simple and recognizable structure: in the morning, a solemn mass in the parish church; in the late afternoon, a procession with the statue of the Saint carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band. It is the moment when the village truly stands still: decorated balconies, ringing bells, and a parade that winds through the entire town before returning to the church.

From the procession to the town square

Once the religious part concludes, the focus shifts to Piazza XX Settembre, the heart of local social life. Here, food stalls open, lights are illuminated, and the evening continues with live music and folk dancing until late at night. The finale is entrusted, as tradition dictates, to the fireworks display that illuminates the Matese mountains around midnight: a grand finale visible from the entire valley, effectively marking the end of the local summer.

The Ferragosto Valligiano

The patronal festival is not an isolated event. In Valle Agricola, it is part of the Ferragosto Valligiano, the summer program promoted by the parish pastoral council together with the Municipality, which fills the village with events in the preceding weeks. In the 2025 edition, the program included concerts in the square, a soccer tournament at the sports field, a children's party with inflatables, open-air cinema, and evenings with musical groups and DJ sets, leading up to the grand finale on August 16th. It is the typical formula of the Campanian Apennine villages: a month when those who have emigrated return home and the village population multiplies.

The flavors of the upper Caserta region

The festival stalls showcase a simple and flavorful mountain cuisine, very different from that of the Caserta plains. Local products typically include:

  • legumes and beans grown on the terraces of the Matese;
  • cheeses from the Matese pastoral tradition;
  • cured meats and grilled meats prepared by local committees;
  • traditional pastries served with local wine.

It is not a structured food and wine festival, but a village table: you eat in the square, sitting on benches, surrounded by local families.

A village to discover

Those arriving for the festival will find a village best explored on foot: the historic center, the Torre Pandone—which the Municipality highlights as a key landmark—the trails that climb toward high-altitude pastures, and the views over the upper Lete valley. Valle Agricola is about 40 kilometers from Caserta and sixty from Naples, making it a good base for a weekend of hiking in the Matese Regional Park, one of the largest in Campania.

When to go

The 2025 edition took place on Saturday, August 16th, the liturgical day of San Rocco, with solemn mass in the morning, the procession in the afternoon, and the evening concert in the square. For 2026, the Municipality of Valle Agricola has not yet published the final calendar of festivities: before setting off, it is advisable to check the dates and program on the official channels of the Municipality and the parish, as times can vary from year to year.

San Rocco in Valle Agricola — edition 2026

In 2026, Valle Agricola is expected to renew its August festival dedicated to its patron saint, San Rocco. At the moment, the Municipality and the parish have not yet released the official calendar or the program of festivities: this page will be updated as soon as the dates are published. In the meantime, the references from the previous edition, which took place in mid-August between the historic center and Piazza XX Settembre, remain valid.

The San Rocco Patronal Festival is indicated by the Municipality of Valle Agricola, in the province of Caserta, as an annual recurrence in the month of August. For the 2026 edition, however, neither the official dates nor the detailed program of the festivities have been published yet.

Based on previous editions, one can expect the usual structure of religious celebrations—solemn mass and a procession with the statue of the Saint accompanied by a brass band—and the civil part of the festival in Piazza XX Settembre, with food stalls, live music, and the final fireworks display. None of this is confirmed for 2026, however: those intending to participate are invited to check the information on the official channels of the Municipality and the parish before planning the trip.

Prices San Rocco in Valle Agricola 2026

Celebrations are traditionally free and open to the public, as indicated by the Municipality of Valle Agricola for previous editions. Only food and drinks at the stalls are paid.

Practical information — San Rocco in Valle Agricola

How to get there

Valle Agricola can be reached by car from the A1 motorway: take the Caianello exit, then the SS372 Telesina and provincial roads toward the Matese; from the Capua or San Vittore exits, travel times are similar. The village is about 40 km from Caserta and 60 km from Naples. The nearest train stations are Vairano-Caianello and Piedimonte Matese; from there, connections are by bus only, with infrequent service on holidays. A car remains the most convenient option.

Admission and costs

Access to religious celebrations and performances in Piazza XX Settembre is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.

Practical tips

  • The village is at an altitude of 690 meters: even in mid-August, the evenings can be cool, so bring a sweater.
  • The historic center has narrow streets: it is best to park at the entrance of the village and continue on foot.
  • For the procession, arriving a little early along the route is the best way to follow it.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village is limited to a few properties: those wishing to stay will find more choices among agritourisms and B&Bs in the neighboring Matese municipalities of Caserta and Benevento, such as Gallo Matese, Letino, Capriati a Volturno, and Piedimonte Matese.
