August 16th in Santa Marina: solemn mass, procession, illuminations, and the flavors of Cilento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
On August 16th, Santa Marina, a small hillside town in southern Cilento in the Province of Salerno, celebrates San Rocco with a festival that weaves together religious devotion, folklore, and conviviality. It is one of the most anticipated summer events for the village residents and the surrounding hamlets—Policastro Bussentino, Poria, and Lupinata—and, as with many Cilento patronal festivals, it also draws back those who have emigrated and return home during these midsummer days.
The day begins early with a solemn mass in the San Rocco parish chapel on Via Santa Croce. Following the service, the procession winds through the village streets: the statue of the saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful, accompanied by hymns and prayers. This is the most intense and well-attended moment of the festival, where the community renews its bond with a pilgrim saint invoked for centuries as a protector against epidemics and contagion. It is worth noting that the town's patron saint is Santa Marina, celebrated on June 18th; the devotion to San Rocco is therefore a parallel, deeply rooted popular tradition that marks the local summer calendar.
The historic center dresses up for the occasion in the days leading up to the event: colorful illuminations and floral decorations create arches of light along the alleys and squares, evoking the atmosphere that announces a saint's festival throughout Southern Italy. Throughout the day, there are concerts, folk shows, and musical performances, often featuring local groups performing traditional Cilento repertoires, from tarantellas to folk songs. In the evening, the square becomes the beating heart of the village, with live music accompanying the festivities late into the night.
Alongside the religious and musical dimensions, there is the gastronomic one, which in Santa Marina means authentic Cilento cooking. The stalls set up along the festival route offer traditional peasant and maritime dishes from this corner of Campania, paired with local wine. What you might find during a festival evening in Cilento:
This is the most convivial part of the day: people eat together at shared tables while music plays just a few steps away.
The procession and the day of celebration conclude with a fireworks display, an essential element of patronal festivals in the South. The fireworks illuminate the sky above the village and are seen by the community as a symbolic sign of the saint's protection over the town and its inhabitants: it is the moment when the entire village, from terraces and squares, looks up together.
Santa Marina is located in the far south of the Province of Salerno, at an altitude of about 415 meters, overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. The village offers views of one of the most picturesque stretches of the Campania coast, while the hamlet of Policastro Bussentino brings the town directly to the sea. The municipal territory is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, making the San Rocco Festival an excellent opportunity to combine the celebration with a holiday among beaches, trails, and inland villages. Visitors from outside the region can discover one of the most authentic traditions of Cilento, far from mass tourism circuits.
As of the update of this page, the Municipality of Santa Marina has not yet published the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival, nor an official confirmation of the dates. However, the event is traditionally fixed for August 16th, the saint's liturgical day, and is held every year. Before traveling, we recommend checking times and the program on the official municipal channels or with the parish, as mass and procession times, as well as the concert schedule, may vary from year to year.
For 2026, no official communication from the Municipality of Santa Marina regarding the San Rocco Festival has been published yet: both the confirmation of the dates and the detailed program for the day are missing. The event page on the municipal website describes the festival as an annual appointment on August 16th, but the last explicitly dated calendar remains that of the 2025 edition.
If tradition is followed, the day will unfold as always around the solemn mass in the San Rocco parish chapel, the procession with the statue carried on the shoulders of the faithful, the illuminations in the historic center, concerts and folk performances, stalls with Cilento cuisine, and the final fireworks display. All celebrations are traditionally free to attend.
Updates are published on the official website of the Municipality of Santa Marina, in the Province of Salerno, and disseminated by the parish and local Cilento channels. For direct information: phone +39 0974 989005, email [email protected].
