The mid-August feast in the hamlet of Verica, on the Modenese Apennines
The San Rocco Festival is the summer celebration of the hamlet of Verica, a small community in the Municipality of Pavullo nel Frignano, in the province of Modena, in the heart of the Modenese Apennines. It takes place in mid-August, traditionally on the weekend around the feast day of San Rocco (August 16th), and represents one of those moments when an entire mountain village comes together to share good food, music, and tradition.
The heart of the festival is the food stand, where you can taste typical dishes of Emilian Apennine cuisine: the unmissable crescentine (the tigelle of Frignano), local cured meats, traditional first courses, and homemade desserts. It's the classic festival food, simple and genuine, prepared by village volunteers.
Alongside the food, the festival offers musical entertainment and evening activities, with live bands and music that liven up the evenings until late. There's also a charity raffle, a popular event for all ages, with proceeds supporting the activities of the parish community.
The festival is rooted in the devotion to San Rocco, a highly revered figure in the Apennines, and accompanies the religious moments of the Verica community with the convivial and festive dimension typical of Italian village festivals. It is organized by the Parish Committee of Verica, which involves village volunteers every year in preparing the event.
The San Rocco Festival is part of the rich calendar of festivals and fairs that liven up the hamlets of Pavullo nel Frignano from June to September, celebrating the villages, traditions, and ancient flavours of the Modenese Apennines. For those visiting the Apennines in August, it's the ideal opportunity to discover the authenticity of village life and the warm welcome of the mountain people.
The 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival is part of the official program "Pavullo'26 — Un'estate di continuEmozioni" of the Municipality of Pavullo nel Frignano, with confirmed dates for Sunday, August 16th, and Monday, August 17th, 2026, starting from 7:00 PM in the I Fondi area of Verica.
The festival, organized by the Parish Committee of Verica, maintains its traditional format: a food stand with local typical products and evening musical entertainment.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including precise evening schedules and musical guests, will be announced by the Parish Committee of Verica in the weeks preceding the festival.
Following the festival's traditional format, the evenings will feature the opening of the food stand with typical Modenese Apennine products (crescentine, cured meats, traditional first courses), live music and dancing, as well as a charity raffle to support the parish community.
The festival takes place in Verica, a hamlet of Pavullo nel Frignano (MO), in the area called I Fondi, in the Modenese Apennines.
By car: Verica is accessible from the SS12 dell'Abetone e del Brennero, towards Pavullo nel Frignano; the hamlet is located near the municipal capital. From Modena, take the SP4 / SS12 towards Pavullo (approx. 45 km). The nearest useful train station is Modena, from where you can continue by car or bus towards the Apennines.
The evenings typically run from 7:00 PM to midnight. Admission to the festival area is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stand.
