The patronal feast of Mattie, blending faith, tradition, and culture in the heart of the Susa Valley
The San Rocco Festival is the most cherished summer event for the town of Mattie, a small village in the lower Susa Valley, Piedmont, nestled on a sunny terrace at the foot of the Orsiera-Rocciavrè massif, within the Metropolitan City of Turin. In mid-August, the community gathers around its patron saint for two days that combine faith, folk tradition, gastronomy, and culture.
The event is organized by the Priors of San Rocco in collaboration with the Mattie Pro Loco, who curate a rich and varied program for all ages each year. The festival takes place under the cool shade of the Susa Valley chestnut trees, in a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the identity of this corner of the Cottian Alps, largely located within the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Natural Park.
The religious heart of the festival is the Holy Mass in the San Rocco chapel, a moment of devotion that kicks off the festivities. Tradition is renewed with the arrival of the Priors, accompanied by the historic Mattie Philharmonic, which brings its brass band music through the village streets. The event also features a market in the Polivalente courtyard and various exhibitions dedicated to local history and culture.
The festival evenings are brought to life by cultural events: plays, vocal group concerts, and musical aperitifs that keep the audience entertained until late. The convivial spirit reaches its peak with the dinner organized by the Pro Loco (by reservation), a perfect opportunity to savor the flavors of mountain cuisine from the Susa Valley in good company.
Visiting the San Rocco Festival is also a chance to discover Mattie and its surroundings. The village, protected by its secluded position, is home to a 14th-century fortified house, the Santa Margherita chapel, and numerous trails leading into the Orsiera-Rocciavrè Park. Located about 45 kilometers from Turin, the festival is the perfect occasion for those looking to experience an alpine summer amidst pristine nature and authentic Piedmontese traditions.
Mattie is located in the lower Susa Valley, about 45 km from Turin. By car: take the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway, exit at Susa, then follow the provincial road towards Mattie. By train: arrive at Susa or Bussoleno station on the Turin-Modane line, then continue by car or local bus.
The festival takes place in mid-August, typically on the weekend surrounding August 16th (the feast day of San Rocco).
Access to the festival events is generally free. The Pro Loco dinner requires a reservation (please contact the Mattie Pro Loco for information and bookings).
We recommend comfortable clothing and a light jacket for the evenings, given the cool mountain climate. There are numerous hiking opportunities in the nearby Orsiera-Rocciavrè Park.
