Grilled sausage, music, and devotion to Saint Rita in the heart of Cilento
The San Nicola di Centola Sausage Festival is a culinary and popular event that, every year in the second half of May, brings the hamlet of San Nicola to life in the municipality of Centola, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento region and Campania. This is not a large-scale event or a tourist trap; it is a community celebration organized by the San Nicola Parish, which for one evening turns the small square next to the church into a large open-air dining room.
It is precisely this intimate scale that makes it so appealing to those visiting Cilento: you won't find a festival manufactured for tourists here, but an authentic village tradition, with volunteers at the stoves, families gathering in the square, and the scent of the grill drifting through the air.
The signature dish of the festival is grilled sausage, cooked outdoors and served at the food stalls that open in the evening, alongside other local specialties. Cilento sausage belongs to the rural tradition of the Salerno hinterland, where pork processing has always been a central moment in the domestic calendar: seasoned with salt, pepper, or chili, it is served here in its simplest and most direct form, straight off the grill.
After dinner, the party shifts to the stage. For the 2026 edition, the square hosted a concert by Gigione, accompanied by Jo Donatello and Menayt: three well-known names on the Neapolitan and Campanian folk music circuit, accustomed to getting village squares dancing with a repertoire that the audience knows by heart and sings along to. It is an artistic choice consistent with the spirit of the event: unfiltered, festive village music designed to engage all generations.
The festival is not an isolated event; it is part of the celebrations in honor of Saint Rita, the saint of impossible causes, to whom the San Nicola community is particularly devoted. In October 2024, the hamlet dedicated a statue to her, blessed in a panoramic position overlooking Capo Palinuro, thanks to the initiative of two local citizens.
The religious part of the festival is concentrated on May 22nd, the saint's liturgical feast day, with the Holy Rosary, open-air Holy Mass with the blessing of the roses — the most characteristic devotional gesture of the cult of Saint Rita — and a fireworks display that closes the evening. The following day is dedicated to the festival, with the gastronomic and musical program.
The proceeds from the event do not go to the organizers; they are donated to the restoration works of the San Nicola parish, following a custom well-established in Cilento villages. Faith, tradition, and solidarity go hand in hand, and participating in the festival also means making a concrete contribution to the life of this small community.
The hamlet of San Nicola is one of the four centers of the Municipality of Centola, along with Palinuro, Foria, and San Severino. The old village preserves the remains of a 17th-century church, partially destroyed by landslides in the early 1960s that forced the relocation of the town center. Among the oldest artifacts is a 17th-century bell decorated with a bas-relief of the patron saint.
From the village viewpoint, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of Capo Palinuro and the most famous stretch of the Cilento coast: a panorama that alone justifies the climb, making the festival evening particularly evocative at sunset.
Those spending their holidays in Palinuro, Marina di Camerota, or Ascea will find this festival the perfect opportunity to leave the coast and discover the inland Cilento, the one of hillside villages and parish feasts. The formula is classic: you eat well, spend little, and dance in the square until late. It is also one of the first events of the season, when Cilento is not yet crowded and the villages still live at their own pace.
The San Nicola di Centola Sausage Festival returned in 2026 with a two-day program, Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, organized by the San Nicola Parish as part of the celebrations dedicated to Saint Rita.
The first evening was reserved for the religious dimension of the festival: the Holy Rosary, open-air Holy Mass with the blessing of the roses — the most identifying rite of the cult of Saint Rita — and a fireworks display to close the day over the rooftops of the hamlet.
Saturday, May 23, was the day of the festival. From 8:00 PM, the food stalls opened with grilled sausage and other Cilento specialties; afterwards, the small square adjacent to the church turned into a stage for the concert of Gigione, joined by Jo Donatello and Menayt, three very popular performers of Neapolitan and Campanian square songs.
As per tradition, the proceeds of the event were donated to the parish restoration works: a way to combine faith, tradition, and solidarity in a small village in the Municipality of Centola, in the province of Salerno.
San Nicola is a hillside hamlet in the Municipality of Centola, in the province of Salerno. By car, it can be reached via the SS 562 and the provincial roads that climb up from Palinuro and the main town of Centola; the reference motorway exit is Battipaglia on the A2, followed by the SS 18 towards Cilento. By train, the nearest station is Centola-Palinuro-Marina di Camerota, on the Tyrrhenian line: from there, you must continue by car or taxi.
The food stalls and the music stage are set up in the small square adjacent to the church, in the center of the hamlet. The space is intimate: it is advisable to arrive early and park along the roads at the entrance to the village, then proceed on foot.
The stalls open in the evening, approximately from 8:00 PM; the concert in the square follows dinner. There is no entrance fee: you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.
The evening is outdoors and in the hills: even in May, it is advisable to bring a sweatshirt. For those staying on the coast, San Nicola is just a few kilometers from Palinuro, where most of the area's accommodation is concentrated.
