The Corpus Domini of Rione Libertà: Eucharistic triduum, procession, illuminations, and open-air concerts in Benevento
In Benevento, the capital of the Sannio region in Campania, the solemnity of Corpus Domini has a specific destination: Piazza San Modesto, in the heart of the Rione Libertà district. Here, every June, the parish of San Modesto transforms the Eucharistic feast into a multi-day neighborhood celebration that balances the spiritual depth of the prayer triduum with the popular joy of illuminations, fairground rides, and open-air concerts.
The parish of San Modesto is the only one in Benevento to hold the privilege of celebrating Corpus Domini with its own Eucharistic procession, held on the Sunday following the main diocesan procession led by the Archbishop. It is an ancient prerogative, proudly upheld by the Rione Libertà community, which fills the streets with decorations, flag-draped balconies, and illuminated windows along the path of the Blessed Sacrament.
The spiritual guidance of the festival is entrusted to the parish priest Father Leonardo Lepore, assisted by the parochial vicar Father Amedeo Varricchio. The Municipality of Benevento grants free patronage and exemption from public land occupation fees every year, a testament to how deeply rooted the event is in the city's calendar.
The religious program opens with a Eucharistic triduum: three consecutive evenings where the 6:30 PM Mass, presided over by visiting monsignors and priests from the Archdiocese of Benevento, is followed by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and adoration until midnight. The adoration under the stars is particularly beloved, held outdoors on the first evening of the triduum, when the square fills with chairs and silence, even as the surrounding neighborhood is already in full celebration mode.
Sunday is the highlight: Masses from morning to evening, followed by the solemn Eucharistic procession that winds through the district's streets—Via Napoli, Via Piccinato, Via Bari, Via Salerno—accompanied by a brass band, leading up to the final blessing and a concluding vigil of adoration that lasts until late at night.
As soon as the sun sets, Piazza San Modesto becomes a stage. The secular program alternates between different genres and audiences: swing and 1930s revivals, Neapolitan song orchestras, summer radio tours, local dance school performances, and traveling band concerts. The finale is reserved for the midnight fireworks launched over the parish church, a moment the entire Rione Libertà waits for and watches from their balconies.
As in any popular Campanian festival, food is part of the ritual: Sannio nougat and hazelnuts, walnuts and brittle, sausage sandwiches, zeppole and fried pastries, and granitas. The Sunday farmers' market offers a showcase of provincial products from Benevento, ranging from olive oil and cheeses to preserves and wines like Falanghina del Sannio and Aglianico.
The cult has Lombard roots. Around 649 AD, the noblewoman Duda Parda of Benevento had a church built to house the remains of Saint Modestus, donated by Pope Gregory I to the Lombard Duke Arechi I; a Benedictine monastery was established alongside it, becoming one of the most influential of the Cassinese Congregation over the centuries. The ancient complex was almost entirely razed by Allied bombing in September 1943, and in the post-war period, a new church dedicated to the same saint was built in the emerging Rione Libertà, the district growing beyond the Sabato river. Today, that parish gathers a community of several thousand faithful, and its June festival is the district's defining identity event.
Those arriving in Benevento during these days will find an authentic festival, not staged for tourists: free, open-air, neighborhood-focused, with Sannio hospitality and its slow pace. It is also an opportunity to discover a surprising capital city: one can spend the day between the Arch of Trajan, the Roman theater, the UNESCO-listed Santa Sofia church, and the Sannio Museum, and then head down to Piazza San Modesto in the evening for the concert.
The Municipality of Benevento gave the green light as early as April 2026, granting the parish led by Father Leonardo Lepore free patronage and exemption from public land occupation fees: the central days were set for June 12 to 14, with an extended period from June 9 to 18 for illuminations and attractions.
The Eucharistic triduum opened on Thursday, June 11, with Mass by Monsignor Pietro Florio and adoration under the stars, continuing on Friday with Monsignor Franco Iampietro and Saturday with Father Teodoro Rapuano, with the Blessed Sacrament exposed until midnight each night. On Sunday the 14th, after the day's Masses, the solemn Eucharistic procession traveled through Via Napoli, Via Piccinato, Via Bari, and Via Salerno accompanied by the band, confirming the privilege that makes San Modesto the only parish in the city to celebrate Corpus Domini with its own procession.
On the secular side, three evenings of free concerts in Piazza San Modesto, the Enjoy Sport dance school performance, the Campagna Amica market on the Spina Verde, the traveling concert by the Città di Pannarano Band, and the midnight fireworks display over the parish church. Fairground rides in Piazzale Martiri delle Foibe and Piazzale Matteo Donisi, and market stalls in Via Cesare Battisti, Via Milano, and Via Torino.
Rione Libertà is located south of Benevento's historic center, across the Sabato river. From Benevento Centrale station, Piazza San Modesto can be reached in about 15-20 minutes on foot or via local bus lines. By car: take the Benevento exit from the SS 7 Appia or SS 88, then follow signs for Via Napoli. Those arriving by air can land at Naples Capodichino (approx. 70 km) and continue by train or bus.
During the festival days, the streets involved in the celebrations—Via Cesare Battisti, Via Milano, Via Torino, and surrounding areas—are closed to traffic, typically from 5:30 PM until midnight, with towing services in effect for illegally parked vehicles. It is advisable to park in outer areas and proceed on foot. Evening church services begin at 6:30 PM, and concerts in the square start around 9:00-9:30 PM.
Admission is free to all religious celebrations, the procession, the concerts in Piazza San Modesto, and the fireworks display. Only the fairground rides and purchases at market stalls and food stands require payment.
Arrive early on Sunday to find a spot along the procession route; bring a light jacket for the evening outdoor adoration. For those staying overnight, central Benevento offers hotels and bed & breakfasts just a few minutes from the district.
