About San Martino Trail

The San Martino Trail is a running event held every spring, drawing hundreds of athletes to the trails of Priverno, in the province of Latina. Starting from the San Martino Castle, the 13-kilometre competitive route winds through woods, along the banks of the Amaseno River, across sections of the Via Francigena, and through the medieval village of Fossanova. Alongside the main race, an 8-kilometre non-competitive fun run is open to everyone, combining sport, landscape, and remembrance in honor of the Andrea Zuccaro Memorial.

A run in the green heart of the Lepini Mountains

The San Martino Trail has become one of the most anticipated events on the Latina province running calendar. It takes place in Priverno, a town in southern Lazio nestled at the foot of the Lepini Mountains, and is named after the park and the San Martino Castle, the green area that serves as the event's headquarters. Here, on a spring morning, over two hundred athletes from across the region and beyond gather, joined by families and walkers choosing the non-competitive route.

The route: 13 kilometres of history and nature

The competitive course measures 13 kilometres with 258 metres of elevation gain: a technical yet accessible route that does not require high-mountain training, making it attractive to both expert trail runners and road runners looking to try off-road racing. The start is at the San Martino Castle; from there, the path descends toward the banks of the Amaseno River and joins sections of the Via Francigena that cross this part of the Pontine countryside.

The most evocative moment is the passage through the medieval village of Fossanova, a hamlet of Priverno famous for its Cistercian abbey, one of the most important Gothic monuments in Lazio. After the village, the route climbs back into the San Martino woods, above the town of Priverno, before returning to the starting point. It is a loop that alternates between dirt roads, trails, and short stretches of asphalt, offering glimpses that tell the layered history of the territory.

The 8-kilometre fun run

Those not interested in the clock can sign up for the 8-kilometre non-competitive tourist walk, which starts alongside the race and follows a shorter, gentler version of the itinerary. It is a format designed for families, groups of friends, and walkers: no rankings, no pressure, just the pleasure of walking at a slow pace through a landscape that remains quiet during other seasons.

The Andrea Zuccaro Memorial

The event is held in conjunction with the Andrea Zuccaro Memorial, dedicated to the memory of a Priverno runner who was one of the founders of the organizing club. The Zuccaro family participates in the event and contributes to the prizes: a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the day, closer to a village festival than a purely competitive race. The 2026 edition also honored the athlete Alex Zanardi.

Organizers

The event is organized by Podistica Priverno in collaboration with A.S.D. Monti Lepini, with the support of the Civil Protection and the patronage of the Municipality of Priverno. The race is part of the UISP calendar for the Latina territorial committee and is included in the Grande Slam UISP "Natalino Nocera" circuit, which brings together the main running events in the province.

Race pack and prizes

The first 400 registrants receive a race pack containing Falia di Priverno, the typical local elongated bread traditionally served with broccoli: a simple and successful way to link the race to local gastronomy. Prizes are awarded to the top five men and women overall, the top five in each category, and the largest teams, featuring local products and sportswear.

Why it's worth it

  • A varied and scenic route, suitable even for those new to trail running.
  • The passage through the village and near the Fossanova Abbey, a Gothic-Cistercian jewel.
  • Affordable entry fees and organization by a historic local club.
  • The 8-kilometre walk option, making the day accessible to everyone.
  • A convivial finale at San Martino Park, with awards and refreshments.

San Martino Trail โ€” edition 2026

The third edition of the San Martino Trail took place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the San Martino Park in Priverno, with over 200 runners starting the 13-kilometre course through the Via Francigena, the Amaseno riverbank, and the medieval village of Fossanova. Alongside the competitive race, an 8-kilometre non-competitive walk was held. As always, the day was paired with the Andrea Zuccaro Memorial.

Third edition, with a course record

The 2026 edition of the San Martino Trail took place on Sunday, May 3, with the start at 9:30 AM from the San Martino Castle. Over 200 athletes arrived from all over Lazio and beyond, joined by a large group of walkers on the 8-kilometre non-competitive route.

The race, valid for the Grande Slam UISP "Natalino Nocera" circuit, was won by Antonello Di Cicco (Atletica Ceprano) in 47'32", a new course record, ahead of Diego Papoccia (Atletica Ferentino, 48'36") and Emanuele Battaglia (Runforever Aprilia). Among the women, Serena Fanella (Atletica Ferentino) won in 54'40", followed by Pamela Gabrielli (Runforever Aprilia) in 1:00'23" and Roberta Andreoli (Podistica Priverno) in 1:02'24".

The event was organized by Podistica Priverno with A.S.D. Monti Lepini, the Civil Protection, and the patronage of the Municipality of Priverno. During the day, Andrea Zuccaro, one of the club's founders, and the athlete Alex Zanardi were remembered.
