The parade of allegorical floats in the heart of San Lazzaro di Savena
The San Lazzaro Carnival is one of the most beloved winter events in San Lazzaro di Savena, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Bologna in Emilia-Romagna. The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, which every year transforms the streets of the center into a large open-air stage made of confetti, streamers, masks, and music.
The procession starts in the afternoon from via San Lazzaro, at the corner of via Repubblica, and follows the city circuit along via Modena and via C. Jussi, concluding in via Repubblica. Accompanying the floats is the San Lazzaro Music Band, which sets the rhythm of the celebration and engages the crowd gathered along the route. The parade is the most anticipated moment and draws families, children, and curious onlookers from all over the area.
The San Lazzaro Carnival is designed primarily for children. During the festival days, the program is enriched with numerous collateral initiatives:
One of the most characteristic initiatives is the free rental of Carnival costumes provided by the municipal library: the costumes, cleaned and ready to wear, can be collected free of charge and returned after the festival. A simple gesture that makes the Carnival even more inclusive and accessible to all families.
Organized by the Municipality of San Lazzaro di Savena, the Carnival is a completely free community celebration, blending Emilian folk tradition, participation of local associations, and entertainment for children. For those living in Bologna and its surroundings, it is the ideal opportunity to spend a winter afternoon filled with colors and joy, just a few minutes from the Emilian capital.
The 2026 edition of the San Lazzaro Carnival took place between Friday, February 6th, and Saturday, February 7th, with the usual parade of allegorical floats as the highlight. The procession started at 3 PM from via San Lazzaro, corner of via Repubblica, accompanied by the San Lazzaro Music Band, crossing the city center amidst confetti and music.
The program for children enlivened the entire weekend, with all initiatives being free of charge.
Free costume rental at the Municipal Library from February 16th to 17th (4 PM-7 PM), with returns by March 15th. In case of bad weather, the parade was scheduled to be postponed to Saturday, February 21st, 2026.
San Lazzaro di Savena is located immediately east of Bologna, along the Via Emilia (SS9). By car, it can be reached from the Bologna ring road (exits 12-13) or from the A14 motorway (San Lazzaro toll booth). By train, the reference station is Bologna Centrale, from which urban and suburban buses depart for San Lazzaro.
The parade of floats takes place in the afternoon, starting at 3 PM. In case of bad weather, the event may be postponed: confirmation will be given by the Municipality in the preceding days.
Participation is free, as are the workshops for children and the costume rental at the library.
During the parade, road traffic in the center will be modified. For information: Territorial Marketing Office, tel. +39 051 6228038 (Tue-Thu), [email protected].
