The March market that brings the historic center of Padula, in the Vallo di Diano, to life
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, around the March 19th anniversary, Padula celebrates Saint Joseph with a fair that is simultaneously a market, a religious festival, and a meeting point for the entire Vallo di Diano. The town, located in the province of Salerno in the heart of southern Campania, sees its historic center transform for a few days into a long path of stalls and exhibition stands, with a continuous flow of visitors arriving from neighboring towns.
Like many San Giuseppe fairs in Southern Italy, the event has its roots in the agricultural calendar: March 19th marked the arrival of spring and the time when farmers and artisans returned to trade goods, tools, and seeds after the winter. That economic function has transformed over time into a popular festival, but the structure of the day has remained essentially the same.
Alongside the market aspect, the religious dimension remains vibrant. Saint Joseph, protector of workers and a central figure in southern popular devotion, is honored with liturgical services and the procession that winds through the town streets, followed by the faithful and accompanied by the band. It is a moment when the community gathers, and it is no coincidence that the date coincides with Father's Day, celebrated in Italy on March 19th.
The fair offers a local craft market, with handmade items, and a long sequence of stalls dedicated to regional products. Among the most recurring offerings:
For families, the fair is above all a pleasant stroll: children find rides and candy stalls, while adults take the opportunity for shopping and an outdoor gastronomic break.
Those arriving in Padula for the fair can easily combine the visit with the Certosa di San Lorenzo, one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list along with the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The old village, perched on the slope, offers views and alleys that deserve a detour, while the Vallo di Diano plain offers vast landscapes and a still-vibrant agricultural tradition, which the March fair tells better than any guidebook.
The event is linked to the March 19th anniversary. The 2025 edition took place from March 16th to 19th, with the historic center animated by exhibition stands, a craft market, tastings, and religious rites. The dates for the next edition have not yet been published: it is advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Padula and local associations before setting off.
The historic center is best explored on foot, and it is preferable to leave your car in the parking lots at the edge of the town, as traffic is restricted during the fair days. March in the Vallo di Diano can still be cool, especially in the evening: layered clothing and comfortable shoes for the uphill sections are recommended. Those who want to avoid the crowds can arrive in the morning when the stalls have just opened and the walk is quieter.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 San Giuseppe Fair in Padula, in the province of Salerno, have not been published. However, the event is historically anchored to the March 19th anniversary, Saint Joseph's Day, and it is reasonable to expect a few days of fair in the town's historic center for 2026 as well.
As in previous editions, the event should be divided between the market section — stalls, crafts, agricultural products, and gastronomy of the Vallo di Diano — and the religious part, with services and the procession. The detailed program, with times and affected streets, is usually released by the Municipality of Padula and local associations close to the event: we recommend checking the official channels before planning your trip.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, Padula-Buonabitacolo exit, then follow signs for the center. By train: the most convenient station is Sapri, connected by bus lines to the Vallo di Diano. Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
Access to the fair along the streets of the historic center is free. Hours follow the market day, with higher attendance in the morning and late afternoon.
