About San Giuseppe Bonfire

As winter fades, the Irpinia region lights its traditional San Giuseppe bonfires: massive wood piles set ablaze in town squares around March 19th. In San Sossio Baronia, a small village in the province of Avellino, this tradition was revived in 2025 by the local Youth Forum. They lit the fire in Piazza Mercato for an evening of folk music, tarantella dancing, spit-roasted pork sandwiches, and classic San Giuseppe zeppole. Free entry, with everyone gathering around the warmth of the fire.

A fire lit in the square at the end of winter

The San Giuseppe bonfire is one of the most widespread rituals in the Campanian Apennines. On the evening of March 19th, the feast day of the patron saint of carpenters, large piles of wood collected in the preceding days are set ablaze in town squares. It is an ancient gesture that bids farewell to winter and symbolically welcomes the new agricultural season. In Irpinia, the ritual remains vibrant in many towns—from Ariano Irpino to Bagnoli Irpino, from Greci to Bisaccia—with each village putting its own spin on the tradition through popular devotion, music, and outdoor feasting.

The bonfire returns to San Sossio Baronia thanks to the youth

In San Sossio Baronia, a village of just over 1,500 residents perched 650 meters above sea level between the Ufita Valley and the Daunian Mountains, the San Giuseppe bonfire was brought back to the square in 2025 by the local Youth Forum. The inaugural edition took place on Saturday, March 22, 2025, in Piazza Mercato, in the heart of the village, starting at 8:00 PM with free admission.

This was about more than just lighting a pile of wood: the organizers' goal was to bring the community together at the end of winter, a time when the Baronia region is still cold and the villages of upper Irpinia feel empty. In this sense, the fire is more of a catalyst than an end in itself—a meeting point around which people can reconnect.

Folk music and Montemarano tarantellas

The evening was brought to life by the group Radici del Sud, featuring a repertoire of folk songs and Montemarano tarantellas. The tarantella from the nearby Irpinian town of Montemarano is one of the most recognizable traditional dances in inland Campania: fast-paced, driven by the accordion, and featuring a line of dancers snaking through the crowd. Bringing this to the square next to the bonfire is the most immediate way to show visitors the true spirit of an Irpinian folk festival.

What to eat around the fire

The culinary offerings are simple and generous, as per village festival tradition:

  • Spit-roasted pork sandwiches, cooked slowly over the embers;
  • Grilled hot dogs for children and those looking for a quick bite;
  • The essential San Giuseppe zeppole, the fried pastry that accompanies the March 19th celebration throughout Southern Italy;
  • Wine and drinks at the stalls set up by the Youth Forum.

Everything is served outdoors in the square, with tables arranged right next to the fire—a setup that makes the evening perfect for families with children.

A community festival, free and accessible

The event is free to attend and requires no reservation. The festival area in the square is flat and accessible to those with limited mobility. It is an event designed for everyone—solo travelers, couples, families, and groups of friends—and its intimate scale is exactly what makes it appealing to those seeking the Italy of small villages rather than large mass-market events.

San Sossio Baronia, the Baronia, and Irpinia

The municipality of San Sossio Baronia (postal code 83050) is part of the Province of Avellino, in Campania, and belongs to the Baronia area, bordering the province of Foggia. The municipal territory includes the hamlets of Civita, Molara, Montuccio, Turro, and Montemauro, and borders Flumeri, San Nicola Baronia, Trevico, Vallesaccarda, Zungoli, Anzano di Puglia, and Monteleone di Puglia. The village takes its name from Saint Sossius, a martyr venerated throughout the Neapolitan area, and falls under the Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia.

Those who travel here will discover an Irpinia rarely touched by mass tourism: wheat fields, forests, wind turbines on the ridges, and a network of villages—Trevico is the highest in Campania, Zungoli is among the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy"—that are perfect for day trips. The local cuisine, featuring homemade pasta, spit-roasted meats, and caciocavallo cheese, is an excellent reason to linger.

When it takes place

The reference date is March 19th, but the 2025 edition was scheduled for the following Saturday, March 22nd, to allow more people to attend. The dates for the new edition have not yet been announced: it is best to follow the Facebook page of the San Sossio Baronia Youth Forum and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino, which publishes the local event calendar.
