The patronal feast of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, blending faith, tradition, and the sweet giaurrina
In the heart of the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina, the town of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Province of Messina, Sicily) celebrates its most iconic event every year around January 20th: the feast dedicated to Saint Sebastian the Martyr, the city's primary patron saint. It is an occasion that deeply intertwines religious devotion with popular tradition, drawing thousands of people to the center and marking, according to custom, the end of the long Christmas holiday season.
The origins of the cult date back to the late 16th century. Tradition tells that a church dedicated to the Holy Martyr was built in the Bassalona district as a vow to protect the population from the plague that was ravaging the area. Since then, Saint Sebastian has been invoked as the protector of the local community, and his festival has become the symbol of the city's identity.
The heart of the celebrations is the Minor Basilica of Saint Sebastian, overlooking Piazza Duomo and Via Roma. It is the largest church in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and one of the most imposing in the province of Messina: built between 1932 and 1935 and inaugurated in 1936, it was elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica in 1992. It houses and venerates the statue of the Saint, which is carried in procession on the day of the feast.
Alongside the liturgical program, the festival thrives on an intense folkloric dimension. From the eve of the feast, the Basilica square, the central Via Roma, and the surrounding streets are filled with a picturesque multitude of stalls. The most anticipated product is the giaurrina (or ciaurrina), the characteristic Saint Sebastian candy made from caramelized honey, whose aroma spreads throughout the center. Tradition links this specialty to the ancient "nail of Saint Sebastian," a symbol of a devotion passed down from generation to generation.
The most solemn moment is the afternoon procession, when the statue of the Saint travels through the main city streets accompanied by local brass bands. The day concludes at the basilica with evening mass and, weather permitting, fireworks that light up the Messina sky.
The 2026 edition opened with the usual liturgical program in the Minor Basilica of Saint Sebastian, marked by the rosary, novena, and daily masses dedicated to the various components of the community.
On January 20th, the day of the patron saint's solemnity, morning masses were held, followed at 11:00 AM by the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by H.E. Mons. Giovanni Accolla, Archbishop of Messina Lipari Santa Lucia del Mela. Due to the red weather alert issued for the area, with the resulting mayoral ordinance closing schools and public places, the afternoon procession of the statue was suspended and postponed.
The civil and religious festivities, including the procession of the Saint through the city streets, were rescheduled for the weekend of January 24-25, 2026. The stalls and the traditional giaurrina made with caramelized honey accompanied the community throughout the days of the festival.
The festival traditionally takes place around January 20th, the day of the solemnity of the patron saint, Saint Sebastian. The stalls remain set up for several days, starting from the eve.
