Saint Roch in Pedesina
Pedesina, in Valgerola (province of Sondrio), is the smallest municipality in Italy by number of residents, yet it preserves a surprisingly vibrant calendar of traditions. Among these, the Saint Roch festival on August 16th is one of the most cherished events of the summer: not by chance, one of the village streets and the Pro Loco headquarters itself bear the saint's name.
Saint Roch, historically invoked as a protector against epidemics, is a figure dear to Alpine popular devotion. In Pedesina, his festival is celebrated with Holy Mass and a procession, right in the middle of the Ferragosto period, when the village reaches its peak attendance with residents and holidaymakers.
The Pro Loco of Pedesina supports the parish and includes the commemoration in the busy summer program, which in the days leading up to it also features the Ferragosto lottery, open-air cinema evenings, and a polenta feast. An example of how, in the small mountain villages of the province of Sondrio, patronal and devotional festivals remain the true glue of the community.
