Devotion to Saint Roch and the evocative night torchlight procession through the streets of Fresonara
The Saint Roch Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Fresonara, a small town in the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont, nestled between the Orba stream and the Alessandria countryside. Every year on August 16th, the day the Church commemorates Saint Roch, the village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that intertwines faith, memory, and a sense of community.
The heart of the festival is the Oratory of Saint Roch, a building constructed in the first half of the 17th century and located in the center of Fresonara. Its gabled facade, marked by two side pilasters, houses a central fresco depicting the Madonna and Child between Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, two saints traditionally invoked as protectors against epidemics and diseases. For centuries, the faithful have turned to Saint Roch for protection, perpetuating a popular devotion deeply rooted in the territory.
The most evocative moment of the evening is the night torchlight procession. At the end of the evening mass celebrated in the Oratory, the statue of Saint Roch is carried in procession through the village streets, illuminated by the torches of the participants. It is a silent and solemn parade that winds through the historic districts of Fresonara—from Piazza Vecchia to the oldest corners of the village—offering the community a moment of great spiritual and emotional intensity.
The Saint Roch Festival is not just a liturgical appointment: it represents a meeting point for the inhabitants of Fresonara and for those who, originally from the town, return in the summer to reconnect with their roots and traditions. Part of the parish's rich calendar of festivals, which also includes the Madonna Nuova on June 15th and the Nativity of Mary on September 8th, the Saint Roch commemoration stands out for its evening and popular character.
An August evening that recounts, with simplicity and authenticity, the identity of a small Piedmontese village and its centuries-old devotion.
