The patronal feast of Riposto

The Saint Peter's Festival is the main religious and cultural event in Riposto, a seaside town in the Province of Catania overlooking the Ionian Sea, nestled in the heart of eastern Sicily at the foot of Mount Etna. Saint Peter, the first of the Apostles and protector of fishermen, is the town's patron saint. His feast, celebrated annually at the end of June and culminating on June 29th, the day of the liturgical solemnity, unites the entire community in a blend of devotion, maritime identity, and popular tradition.

The statue and the Mother Basilica

Local veneration centers around the precious statue of Saint Peter, sculpted in Naples in 1884 and housed in the Mother Basilica dedicated to the saint, an imposing neoclassical building from the 18th and 19th centuries that dominates the center of Riposto. The statue, enriched over the centuries by the gifts of the faithful, is the focal point of the celebrations and is carried in procession to the great emotion of the population.

The triduum and the blessing of the fishermen

The festivities are preceded by a solemn triduum of prayer. On the main days, the relic of the saint is carried in procession to the fish market, where the priest imparts the traditional blessing of the fishermen and fishmongers, a gesture that speaks to the deep bond between Riposto and the sea.

The sea procession

The most anticipated moment is the historic sea procession: the statue of Saint Peter is taken to the Commercial Port and embarked on a fishing boat, beginning a picturesque crossing accompanied by a procession of vessels to the stretch of sea in front of the church of Santa Maria del Rosario, in the hamlet of Torre Archirafi. This rite, an authentic expression of the town's maritime soul, has returned to thrill the people of Riposto after years of absence.

Music, events, and tradition

Alongside the religious appointments, the festival offers shows, musical reviews, and concerts in the town squares, as well as traditional illuminations and civil celebrations that enliven Riposto for several days. The grand procession of the statue through the city streets in the evening solemnly closes the festival on the day of the patron saint.
