The patronal feast of Linera, a village in Santa Venerina, on the slopes of Mount Etna

In the heart of the Etna autumn, the village of Linera, in the municipality of Santa Venerina (Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily), celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima del Lume. The feast traditionally falls on the third Sunday of November, the Sunday preceding the Solemnity of Christ the King, and is the most anticipated event of the year for the entire Linera community.
Devotion to the Madonna del Lume dates back to 1722, when, according to tradition, a woman had a Marian vision in which the Virgin revealed herself under the title of Mother Santissima del Lume, asking to be painted as she appeared. Spread by the Jesuit Fathers in Sicily, Mexico, and worldwide, the cult was officially recognized by Pope Clement XII in 1738. In Linera, the veneration centers on the Mother Church, whose construction began in 1889 and which, following damage from the 1914 earthquake, was rebuilt in the following decades.
The highlight is the solemn afternoon procession. The statue of the Virgin, adorned with ex-votos donated over the centuries by the faithful for graces received, is placed on an artistic wooden fercolo, topped by a six-column wooden canopy. Around 3:00 PM, the Madonna makes her solemn entrance into the town streets, welcomed by the festive sound of bells and fireworks. At the end, the people of Linera gather around the Virgin to sing the traditional cantata to the Madonna, a moment of intense emotion.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by numerous side events that enliven the entire village:
The Linera festival is not just a local event: for several years, it has attracted pilgrims from various parts of the island, particularly from Porticello, a seaside village in the Palermo area also deeply linked to the cult of the Madonna del Lume. This bond makes the recurrence a spiritual bridge between the Ionian coast of Catania and the Tyrrhenian coast of Palermo, a testament to the identity-forming power of Sicilian popular traditions.
The patronal feast of Linera, a village in Santa Venerina (Catania), returns in 2026 according to the custom that places it on the third Sunday of November. As every year, the solemn afternoon procession on the artistic wooden fercolo, the fair along the town streets, and the musical-pyrotechnic shows are expected. The precise dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Santa Maria del Lume Parish: this page will be updated as soon as official information is available.
