About Feast of Maria SS. del Lume

Every year, on the third Sunday of November, the village of Linera in Santa Venerina (Catania) celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima del Lume. It is one of the most heartfelt religious festivals on the slopes of Mount Etna: in the afternoon, the ancient statue is solemnly carried out of the Mother Church on an artistic wooden fercolo (processional float), amidst the ringing of bells and fireworks, for a long and well-attended procession through the town streets. Alongside the religious devotion, the festival features a fair, theatrical performances, sacred music, and fireworks displays, drawing faithful and pilgrims from across Sicily.

The patronal feast of Linera

In the heart of the Etna autumn, the village of Linera, in the municipality of Santa Venerina (Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily), celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima del Lume. The feast traditionally falls on the third Sunday of November, the Sunday preceding the Solemnity of Christ the King, and is the most anticipated event of the year for the entire Linera community.

Cult and origins

Devotion to the Madonna del Lume dates back to 1722, when, according to tradition, a woman had a Marian vision in which the Virgin revealed herself under the title of Mother Santissima del Lume, asking to be painted as she appeared. Spread by the Jesuit Fathers in Sicily, Mexico, and worldwide, the cult was officially recognized by Pope Clement XII in 1738. In Linera, the veneration centers on the Mother Church, whose construction began in 1889 and which, following damage from the 1914 earthquake, was rebuilt in the following decades.

The procession on the fercolo

The highlight is the solemn afternoon procession. The statue of the Virgin, adorned with ex-votos donated over the centuries by the faithful for graces received, is placed on an artistic wooden fercolo, topped by a six-column wooden canopy. Around 3:00 PM, the Madonna makes her solemn entrance into the town streets, welcomed by the festive sound of bells and fireworks. At the end, the people of Linera gather around the Virgin to sing the traditional cantata to the Madonna, a moment of intense emotion.

Fair, music, and shows

In recent years, the festival has been enriched by numerous side events that enliven the entire village:

  • the fair with stalls, sweets, and local products along the town streets;
  • theatrical reviews and cultural and recreational moments;
  • concerts and sacred music performances;
  • the evocative musical-pyrotechnic shows that close the day of celebration.

A devotion that unites Sicily

The Linera festival is not just a local event: for several years, it has attracted pilgrims from various parts of the island, particularly from Porticello, a seaside village in the Palermo area also deeply linked to the cult of the Madonna del Lume. This bond makes the recurrence a spiritual bridge between the Ionian coast of Catania and the Tyrrhenian coast of Palermo, a testament to the identity-forming power of Sicilian popular traditions.
