The Saint Nicholas of Bari Patronal Feast is the most heartfelt religious event in Casaletto Spartano, a town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania. The village stands at about 450 meters above sea level in the hinterland of the Gulf of Policastro, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in a territory marked by the waters of the Bussento and its tributary, the Bussentino. Every year, on December 6th, the village interrupts the slow rhythm of winter to honor the saint to whom the parish church is dedicated.
Bishop of Myra and later venerated in Bari, where his relics arrived at the end of the 11th century, Saint Nicholas is among the most beloved figures of Southern Christianity. As the protector of children, sailors, and the poor, his cult spread far beyond coastal cities, taking root even in inland towns like Casaletto Spartano. Here, he represents a symbol of protection and hope, a spiritual bond that the community renews punctually on the day of his feast. It should be noted that the local devotional calendar is particularly rich: alongside Saint Nicholas, the town also celebrates Maria Santissima dei Martiri and Saint Roch with great participation at other times of the year.
The heart of the festival is liturgical. In the morning, a solemn mass is celebrated in honor of the patron, preceded in the days before by the usual moments of spiritual preparation organized by the parish. This is followed by the procession: the statue of Saint Nicholas is carried on shoulders through the streets of the town, amidst hymns and prayers, along a route that touches the most significant points of the village. It is the most evocative moment of the day, when the community—including families who have returned to the village for the occasion—gathers together behind the statue of the saint.
As this is a festival organized by the parish with the support of the community, times may vary from year to year: it is always advisable to check the final program through the official channels of the Saint Nicholas of Bari Parish in the days immediately preceding the event.
The mother church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari, located in Piazza Municipio, has roots dating back to the Middle Ages: according to parish records, its consecration dates back to 1177 by the Bishop of Policastro. The earthquake of December 16, 1857, severely damaged the building, which was later demolished and rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to the efforts of Archpriest Antonio Polito de Rosa and the generosity of the population, including Casaletto natives who had emigrated to Brazil and sent contributions for the work. It is a story that speaks volumes about the tenacity of this town and adds depth to the patronal feast.
Those arriving in Casaletto Spartano for the festival will find a surprising territory. The municipality consists of two main inhabited centers, the main town and the hamlet of Battaglia, as well as numerous rural districts scattered over more than seventy square kilometers. Not far away is the Capelli di Venere (Venus' Hair) natural oasis, the famous waterfall fed by the Bussentino that owes its name to the maidenhair fern that covers its damp walls. Even in winter, with swollen waters, it remains one of the most photographed spots in inland Cilento.
The patronal feast is also an opportunity to get closer to the cuisine of this part of Campania: extra virgin olive oil, local cheeses, cured meats, wood-fired bread, and simple traditional peasant desserts, prepared especially in homes for the occasion. The proximity to Sapri and the coast of the Gulf of Policastro also makes it easy to organize a weekend among villages, nature, and the sea in winter.
This is not a large tourist event, and for this very reason, it retains a rare value: the Saint Nicholas of Bari Feast in Casaletto Spartano is a true village festival, experienced by the community before it is experienced by visitors. Those looking for an authentic experience of Cilento popular devotion, far from crowded circuits, will find the right atmosphere here, in a village that on December 6th finds itself more united and warmer than usual.
At the moment, no official dates or a detailed program have been published for the 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Casaletto Spartano, in the province of Salerno. The celebration of Saint Nicholas of Bari is, however, linked to a fixed date in the liturgical calendar, December 6th, and is traditionally organized by the parish named after the saint.
As in previous years, it is reasonable to expect a similar structure: a solemn mass in the parish church and a procession of the patron's statue through the streets of the historic center. The precise times, any moments of preparation in the preceding days, and collateral initiatives will be announced by the organizers closer to the date.
