The patron saint festival of Calascio, at the foot of Rocca Calascio
The Saint Nicholas of Bari Patronal Feast is the most cherished religious and folk event in Calascio, a mountain village in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Saint Nicholas of Myra, venerated in Bari and the patron saint of the village, is celebrated by the community with a day dedicated to devotion, remembrance, and reunions between local families and the many 'Calascini' who return for the occasion.
Calascio stands at an altitude of over 1,200 meters on the plateau dominated by Rocca Calascio, one of the highest fortresses in Italy and one of the most photographed landscapes in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. In this setting of stone and mountains, the patron saint festival takes on a special value: it is the moment when a small village in the Apennine hinterland gathers around its roots, amidst the light-colored stone houses and narrow streets of the historic center.
The heart of the festival is the solemn Mass celebrated in the church of San Nicola di Bari, followed by the traditional procession with the statue of the saint carried through the village streets. As the religious parade passes, residents look out from their homes and accompany the saint with prayers and songs, in a ritual passed down from generation to generation. The blessing of the community concludes the most solemn moment of the day.
As in many Abruzzese villages, the patronal feast is not just a liturgical moment but also an opportunity for the entire community to gather. It is the day when the village comes alive, doors open, and the collective memory of Calascio is renewed. For visitors, participating in the Saint Nicholas Feast means discovering the most authentic side of Abruzzo, that of small mountain villages that proudly guard their traditions.
In 2026, the celebrations in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari in Calascio were held on Sunday, May 17. On the occasion of the patronal feast, Holy Mass was celebrated in the church of San Nicola, followed by a procession with the statue of the saint through the historic center of the village, at the foot of Rocca Calascio. The event brought together the local community and many 'Calascini' who returned for the occasion to one of the highest villages in the Gran Sasso.

Calascio can be reached by car from the A24 motorway (L'Aquila Est or Bussi–Popoli exit), continuing along the inland roads towards the Navelli plateau and Santo Stefano di Sessanio. The village is about 40 km from L'Aquila.
The festival takes place at a high altitude: even in spring, temperatures can be cool, so appropriate clothing is recommended. It is an ideal occasion to combine your visit with a trip to Rocca Calascio and the nearby villages of Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte.
Participation in religious celebrations is free and open to all.
