Nearly fifty years of festivities in Alvisopoli, featuring Veneto-Friulian cuisine and the greased pole challenge on the canal
The Saint Louis Festival takes place in Alvisopoli, a hamlet of Fossalta di Portogruaro in the province of Venice, a village founded as an ideal community by the noble Mocenigo family. The festival, now in its 49th edition, is one of the longest-standing and most cherished events in eastern Venice.
Gastronomy is the heart of the festival: local volunteers passionately prepare traditional dishes from the border region between Veneto and Friuli, such as duck ragu, stewed tripe, and grilled steak and ribs. Authentic cuisine that tells the story of a territory straddling two regions.
The most anticipated event is the historic horizontal greased pole challenge on the Taglio canal: a popular competition, held for over a century, where participants advance on a slippery pole suspended over the water, trying to reach the flag. The program also includes card tournaments, ballroom dancing evenings, musical performances, dance, and skating shows, as well as activities for children.
The 49th edition of the Saint Louis Festival in Alvisopoli will be held from May 29 to June 14, 2026, in the hamlet of Fossalta di Portogruaro (Venice). Organized by the Alvisopoli Festival Committee, it confirms the established format that makes the festival a benchmark event in eastern Venice.
The food stalls will offer traditional Veneto-Friulian dishes, while the program will alternate tournaments, dancing evenings, music, and shows, culminating in the historic greased pole challenge on the Taglio canal.
The festival spans over two weeks. The usual, documented structure includes:
