The centuries-old tradition of the banquet tables and the cavalcade in Cianciana
The Saint Joseph Festival is the defining celebration of Cianciana, a town in the Province of Agrigento nestled in the hilly hinterland of Sicily. A centuries-old tradition, it takes place around March 19th, a date coinciding with the spring equinox; it is no coincidence that the festival symbolically marks the awakening of nature after winter and opens the town's calendar of events. It is an occasion deeply rooted in rural culture, where religious devotion and popular tradition merge into a single, grand collective ritual.
The heart of the festival lies in the tavolate (banquet tables), richly laden tables set up by devoted families as an act of thanksgiving to the Saint. Originally conceived as a Eucharistic banquet and a gesture of charity toward the poor, these tables are now open to the entire community and visitors alike. They feature the famous votive breads and purciddati—hand-decorated breads crafted according to traditional shapes—alongside almond sweets, dried figs, and cubbaita. As it falls during the Lenten period, the dishes on the tables exclude meat and follow traditional local recipes.
Among the most spectacular moments is the cavalcade (the "cravaccata"), which takes place on the afternoon of March 19th: horses, mules, and mounts adorned for the occasion accompany the reenactment of the flight into Egypt, with the Holy Family seeking shelter by knocking on doors. The performance, animated by the "sinzale" who dramatize the repeated refusals, brings the streets of the historic center to life up to the Clock Tower, creating one of the most cherished images in the town's memory.
The day concludes with the triumphal procession of the Saint Joseph statue through the streets of Cianciana, accompanied by a brass band, fireworks, and the devotion of the faithful. The entire organizational effort is coordinated by the Superiors, the festival leaders who symbolically pass the torch each year through the handing over of the "plangia." Organization begins immediately after Epiphany and continues through the novena and the Wednesdays of devotion leading up to March 19th.
Visiting Cianciana during the Saint Joseph Festival means immersing yourself in an authentic and lesser-known side of Sicily, where faith becomes community and tradition is passed down from generation to generation. It is an ideal opportunity to discover a village in the Agrigento hinterland, savor its ritual breads, and participate in one of the island's most genuine spring festivals.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Cianciana was held on March 18th and 19th. On March 18th, with the arrival of the brass band and the collection of offerings by the Superior, the large banquet tables were set up, opening for visits in the evening after vespers. On March 19th, following the dawn announcement with fireworks and music, the blessing of the tables and the "pigliata" of the Saints took place; in the afternoon, the cavalcade with the reenactment of the flight into Egypt animated the streets up to the Clock Tower. In the evening, the procession of the Saint Joseph statue, which departed from the church of Sant'Antonio, concluded the festivities amidst fireworks and the exchange of the plangia between the Superiors.
