The patronal feast of the farmers of Giarre, blending faith, agricultural tradition, and the Le Spighe historical pageant
In the town of Giarre, in the province of Catania (Sicily), the Saint Isidore the Farmer Festival is the most important religious and popular event of the year. Saint Isidore, a farmer born in Madrid around 1070 and canonized in 1622, is venerated as the protector of land workers: a choice that is far from coincidental in an area where agriculture, citrus groves, and the cultivation of the Etna countryside have defined the life and economy of the community for centuries.
Celebrations are concentrated in the second half of May and culminate around May 15th, the Saint's liturgical day. Spiritual preparation includes a triduum that concludes with the opening of the chapel and the enthronement of the statue on the main altar of the Cathedral. On the main day, following the solemn Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Saint is carried on the shoulders of devotees in a triumphal procession through the streets of the center, accompanied by the sound of bells, the marching band, the throwing of traditional sweets, and fireworks.
A defining moment of the festival is the blessing of the agricultural fields, which takes place in Piazza Immacolata: a gesture that renews the ancient bond between the community of Giarre and the land, entrusting the success of the harvests to the patron saint. Upon the return of the procession, Piazza Duomo hosts the pyromusical show and the solemn blessing imparted with the Saint's reliquary arm.
In recent years, the festival has been enriched by the Le Spighe di Sant'Isidoro historical pageant, scheduled for the Saturday preceding the main feast. A parade in period costumes with about one hundred participants that, starting from the Town Hall, crosses the streets of the center, including Via Callipoli, Corso Italia, Viale Libertà , and Piazza Ungheria. It involves local parish youth, students from the city's comprehensive school, and historical groups such as the Sicularagonensia of Randazzo, with drummers, flag-wavers, ladies, commoners, and falconers. The initiative, promoted by the parish community, retraces the highlights of Giarre's history.
Surrounding the religious rites, the popular dimension of the festival comes to life: market stalls, food stands featuring traditional Sicilian dishes, local products, and the atmosphere of a town in celebration. For the Municipality of Giarre, the Saint Isidore the Farmer Festival remains a precious opportunity for collective identity, capable of uniting faith, rural memory, and the folklore of the Etna territory.
The 2026 program kicked off on Saturday, May 9th at 5:00 PM with the Le Spighe di Sant'Isidoro historical pageant, which departed from the Town Hall and wound its way along Via Callipoli, Corso Italia, Viale Libertà , Via Rosmini, Piazza Ungheria, and Via Meli. About one hundred participants in period costumes, including parish youth, students from the San Giovanni Bosco school, and the Sicularagonensia group from Randazzo with drummers, flag-wavers, and falconers, brought the streets of the center to life.
Religious celebrations continued in the following days with the preparatory triduum and culminated around May 15th, the Saint's day, with the solemn Mass in the Cathedral, the procession of the statue on shoulders, the blessing of the fields in Piazza Immacolata, and the pyromusical show in Piazza Duomo, concluded by the blessing with the reliquary arm.
The celebrations take place in the center of Giarre (CT), with the epicenter at the Cathedral (Church of Saint Isidore the Farmer), Piazza Duomo, and Piazza Immacolata.
