The winter festival of the patron saint of animals in Cassaro, featuring 21 cannon shots, the Cialibru auction, and the evocative Ciaccariata
The Saint Anthony the Abbot Festival is the most anticipated religious and popular event in Cassaro, the smallest and least populated municipality in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily, perched on the Iblei Mountains along the Anapo Valley. Every year, on January 17th, the community gathers around the hermit saint, venerated as the protector of animals and fire, in a celebration deeply rooted in the local rural and pastoral culture.
The main day begins before dawn, around five in the morning, with the firing of 21 cannon shots that announce the start of the solemn festivities to the entire town. During the morning, High Mass is celebrated in the 18th-century Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot, a building rich in marble and gilded stucco that dominates the highest part of the village.
In the early afternoon, the Cialibru takes place—a traditional auction of gifts offered by the faithful to the saint: rabbits, cockerels, piglets, lambs, as well as oranges, wine, oil, and walnuts, the fruits of labor in the fields. It is a moment of great popular participation, where generosity toward Saint Anthony becomes a collective celebration. This is followed by the blessing of the animals and the products of the earth on the church parvis, a ritual deeply ingrained in local tradition.
In the evening, the statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot is carried on the shoulders of the youth through the streets of Cassaro in a triumphal procession, marked by the rhythm of the Cassaro Drum Group. The most evocative moment is the Ciaccariata, the traditional run with lit torches that accompanies the passage of the saint, evoking the ancient bond between Saint Anthony and fire. The day concludes with fireworks.
Alongside the fixed festival on January 17th, Cassaro also celebrates a summer patronal festival on the last Sunday of July, which every three years alternates Saint Anthony the Abbot with Saint Joseph and Saint Sebastian. On that occasion, the Nisciuta ritual sees the saint appearing from the church doorway, welcomed by the throwing of leaflets and nzaiareddi (ribbons), in another grand display of devotion involving the entire Iblean village.
The 2026 Saint Anthony the Abbot Festival in Cassaro opened on Wednesday, January 14th, with the start of the triduum: at 6:15 PM, the Unveiling of the venerated statue of the saint took place, followed by Holy Mass with a homily and the final raffle. On January 15th and 16th, celebrations continued at 6:00 PM with masses, Eucharistic adoration, and vespers.
On the day of the festival, at 5:00 AM, 21 cannon shots announced the solemn festivities. In the early afternoon, the Cialibru auction was held with gifts offered by the faithful, followed by the blessing of the animals and the parade of the Cassaro Drum Group. In the evening, the solemn procession of the statue through the town streets, accompanied by the Ciaccariata and the music of the Augustafolk group, concluded the day with fireworks.
The winter festival is celebrated every year on January 17th, preceded by a triduum starting January 14th. The summer edition occurs on the last Sunday of July every three years (in rotation with Saint Joseph and Saint Sebastian).
