About Saint Anthony Festival

Every year in mid-June, Ariano Irpino gathers to honor Saint Anthony of Padua in one of Irpinia's most heartfelt celebrations. Illuminated streets, the blessing of the bread, the translation of the statue, and a solemn procession through the parish of San Pietro Apostolo blend with a secular program of music, theatre, sports, children's activities, and food stalls. In 2026, the festival celebrated its centenary: one hundred years of devotion, from 1926 to the present, under the motto "together."

A century of devotion

The Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is one of the most anticipated events in the calendar of Ariano Irpino, a town in the Province of Avellino, nestled in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania. Organized by the Festival Committee in collaboration with the San Pietro Apostolo and Sant'Agostino Parish, the celebration centers around June 13th, the liturgical feast day of the Saint of Padua, and engages the entire neighborhood and city for four days.

In 2026, the festival reached a historic milestone: one hundred years of festivities, from 1926 to 2026. A century of faith, tradition, and community that the committee commemorated with an extraordinary program, unveiled in a press conference attended by Mayor Mario Ferrante, parish priest Father Daniele Palumbo, and local historian Professor Antonio Alterio.

The religious program

The heart of the festival remains deeply religious. The eve is dedicated to confessions and the blessing of Saint Anthony's bread, an ancient gesture linked to Antonian charity: the blessed loaves are distributed to the faithful and taken into homes as a sign of protection. On the feast day, masses are held from dawn until dusk, culminating in the solemn celebration presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia, Monsignor Sergio Melillo.

Immediately following is the procession, the most moving moment: the statue of the Saint travels through the streets of the parish—via Guardia, via Vitale, via Giacomo Matteotti, via Fontananuova, and Corso Umberto I—accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and marching bands. The streets are decorated for the occasion, and illuminations create arches of light above the crowd. The evening concludes with a final celebration in the square.

The secular program

Alongside the religious dimension, the committee organizes a rich secular calendar every year that gives the event the flavor of a true village festival:

  • Lighting of the illuminations, marking the official start of the festivities
  • Concerts and musical evenings in the square, featuring Italian artists and local groups
  • Theatrical performances and book presentations, curated by parish associations
  • Children's entertainment, games, and workshops
  • Sports tournaments, including the football tournament dedicated to the memory of Father Carmine Lo Surdo
  • Food area with Irpinian specialties and urban walks to discover the city

The traditional Saint Anthony lottery is also a staple, with proceeds supporting the parish community's activities.

Ariano Irpino, the City of the Three Hills

Ariano Irpino is known as the City of the Three Hills (Città del Tricolle) for the three ridges upon which it stretches, at an altitude of over 700 meters, in a strategic position between Campania and Puglia. A city of art and ceramics, an episcopal seat, and an ancient crossroads along the Via Traiana, Ariano preserves a heritage consisting of a Norman castle, a cathedral, artisan workshops, and a robust gastronomic tradition, ranging from cheeses to Irpinian wines.

The Saint Anthony Festival fits into this context as one of the moments when the city recognizes itself: a collective ritual that unites different generations, draws back emigrants who return for the occasion, and transforms the neighborhood streets into one large shared space. It is no coincidence that the motto chosen for the centenary was "together."

Why attend

Those arriving in Ariano Irpino in June will find an authentic festival, far from mass tourism circuits, where popular participation is not staged but lived. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the most genuine side of Irpinia, taste local products, listen to live music under the lights, and witness a procession that has remained essentially unchanged for a century.

Saint Anthony Festival — edition 2026

Historic edition: in 2026, the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival in Ariano Irpino celebrated its centenary, exactly one hundred years since 1926. Four days, from June 12 to 15, with an extraordinary program organized by the Festival Committee and the San Pietro Apostolo Parish: bread blessing, solemn mass presided over by Bishop Sergio Melillo, procession through the parish streets, and a secular calendar including music, theatre, sports, children's entertainment, and a food area, under the motto "together."

The 1926-2026 centenary

The 2026 edition was the one of the hundred years: a milestone that the Festival Committee, chaired by parish priest Father Daniele Palumbo and coordinated by Antonella Ardito, prepared months in advance. The program was unveiled on June 3rd during a presentation evening at Casalino, with the participation of Mayor Mario Ferrante, the parish priest, and historian Professor Antonio Alterio, who reconstructed the origins of the Arianese devotion to Saint Anthony; on this occasion, the official centenary jersey was also presented.

Faith and community

The religious core remained June 13th, the Saint's feast day, with a long sequence of masses from dawn to dusk, the solemn celebration presided over by Bishop Monsignor Sergio Melillo, and the procession along via Guardia, via Vitale, via Giacomo Matteotti, via Fontananuova, and Corso Umberto I. The blessing of Saint Anthony's bread and the translation of the statue were, as always, highlights.

Culture and entertainment

Alongside the celebrations, the secular program provided space for art, culture, history, sports, children's entertainment, and a food area. Cultural highlights included the presentation of the book A(r)marsi con cinque ciottoli by Father Roberto Faccenda and the theatrical and musical show È tutto una meraviglia, performed by the parish company "In cammino." The traditional Saint Anthony lottery also accompanied the centenary festivities.
