About Saint Andrew's

Every late November, Nuvolento, a small municipality in the Valle Sabbia (Brescia province), celebrates its patron saint, Saint Andrew the Apostle (November 30th), with a festival that blends religious tradition, culture, and gastronomy. For two days, the town comes alive with a market of artisans and local products, roasted chestnuts, food stalls, and especially the Saint Andrew's casoncelli, the local specialty with Communal Designation. Amidst exhibitions, solemn vespers, music, and an aperitif in the piazza, it's a time for the community to reconnect with its roots.

A Festival Telling Nuvolento's Story

For many years, the Municipality of Nuvolento, in the province of Brescia, has dedicated a solemn festival to the memory of Saint Andrew the Apostle and Martyr, commemorated by the Church on November 30th. The saint, to whom a small village church is dedicated, is honored with two days of tastings, music, and markets that attract residents and visitors from all over the Valle Sabbia and the Brescia plain.

Saint Andrew's Casoncelli

The culinary heart of the festival is the Saint Andrew's casoncello, a fresh egg pasta rolled thin and filled with simple ingredients: breadcrumbs and grated cheese, parsley, and garlic. It's served with a rich butter sauce flavored with sage and plenty of Grana Padano DOP. This recipe is so distinctive that it has been recognized with a Communal Designation (DeCo), a symbol of the region's peasant cuisine.

Between Market, Exhibitions, and Tradition

Throughout the day, a market of artisans and local and handcrafted products winds through the streets of the town center. There are also themed exhibitions held in municipal spaces, displays of ancient prints of the saint in the library, roasted chestnuts, hot drinks, food stalls, and a bar area. The day concludes with an aperitif with live music in the town hall courtyard, under a heated marquee.

Faith and Community

Alongside the convivial aspect, the religious dimension remains central: solemn vespers and mass in honor of the patron saint mark the festival's calendar, recalling the ancient bond between the town and Saint Andrew. It's an opportunity to rediscover the identity of a village in the Valle Sabbia that takes pride in its conviviality and traditions.
