The charity run at Villa Pamphili for neuro-oncology patients
Run to the Max for IRENE is the charity running event that brings the paths of Villa Doria Pamphilj—Rome's largest historic park, located in the heart of the Monteverde-Gianicolense district—to life every autumn. The event is promoted by the IRENE OdV Association, a Roman organization that has spent years supporting patients affected by brain tumors and their families within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region.
The name of the initiative is no mere play on words: the race is dedicated to the memory of Massimo Crocco, a passionate sportsman who lost his life to a brain tumor. "Running to the max" thus becomes a way to remember him while raising funds for home care and qualified support for neuro-oncology patients.
The event is designed to be inclusive. Those seeking a timed challenge can take part in the 10 km competitive race, which attracts local running clubs and registered athletes, while those who simply want to show their support can join the 5 km non-competitive event. This shorter route is open to everyone—whether running or walking—and is specifically tailored for patients, family members, friends, and supporters of the association.
Running here is unlike anywhere else. Villa Doria Pamphilj is a park spanning nearly 180 hectares, filled with pine forests, meadows, dirt paths, and 17th-century landmarks, from the Casino del Bel Respiro to the lake and its fountain. The meeting point is set at the "Bel Respiro" Senior Center, with access from Via Vitellia 104 or Via Leone XIII. In the late October afternoon, the light hitting the umbrella pines creates one of the most beautiful backdrops a Roman race can offer.
Participants always describe it the same way: while there is a competitive element, it is never the focus of the day. At the starting line, you will find a mix of athletes in racing singlets, doctors and nurses from the Regina Elena Institute, volunteers, families with children, and patients completing the five kilometers at their own pace. By the end, the refreshment area becomes a place for collective gathering rather than just a simple pit stop.
All proceeds from registration fees support the activities of the IRENE OdV Association: home care, psychological support, and awareness campaigns regarding brain tumors. It is one of those rare occasions where an afternoon of sport translates into something truly tangible for those facing a difficult illness. This is precisely why the event has established itself over the years as a highly anticipated date in the Roman autumn running calendar.
The Capital enjoys outdoor sports year-round, but October offers the ideal climate: mild temperatures, bright days, and parks in the full glory of their autumn colors. "Run to the Max for IRENE" fits perfectly into this season alongside the many road and park races that animate Roman weekends, standing out for its clear charitable mission and the accessibility of a course that anyone can complete.
The charity run of the IRENE OdV Association returns to Villa Doria Pamphilj in memory of Massimo Crocco. The event is set for Saturday, October 24, 2026, with a meeting time of 3:00 PM at the "Bel Respiro" Senior Center (entrance via Via Vitellia 104 or Via Leone XIII) and the start scheduled for 4:00 PM.
The dual format is confirmed: a 10 km competitive race with chip timing for athletes and Roman sports clubs, and a 5 km non-competitive event open to patients, family members, friends, and anyone who wishes to participate, whether running or walking. Technical support is provided by ASD Podistica Ostia.
All registered participants will receive a race pack and can enjoy post-race refreshments. Registration closes on Friday, October 23, but it is also possible to register on-site on the day of the race, up to 30 minutes before the start.
Organization: Associazione IRENE OdV, with technical support from ASD Podistica Ostia.
