About Rome Videogame Lab

Rome Videogame Lab is the capital's festival dedicated to video games as a cultural, social, and educational medium. Every spring, the WEGIL space in Trastevere hosts four days of events, bringing together Italian developers and international guests for Minecraft and Roblox workshops, esports tournaments, the Indie Show area, a Mario Kart track, racing simulators, and insightful talks. This free-admission event is promoted by the Lazio Region and designed for families, young people, enthusiasts, and industry professionals.

The video game festival in the heart of Rome

Rome Videogame Lab is the event that showcases video games in Rome as a form of contemporary culture, an educational tool, and a genuine creative industry. Created to introduce the general public to the world of gaming, the festival has grown over the years to become one of Central Italy's benchmark events for gaming fans, attracting thousands of visitors each edition. The project is promoted by the Lazio Region and produced by QAcademy, with the support of the Rome Chamber of Commerce and the Italian Trade Agency (ICE).

WEGIL, the venue in Trastevere

The festival takes place at WEGIL, the Lazio Region's cultural hub overlooking Largo Ascianghi in Rome's Trastevere district. Designed by architect Luigi Moretti in 1933 as a prime example of rationalist architecture, the building is now a space dedicated to exhibitions and events, providing a striking backdrop for an event that blends technology, play, and education. Some activities also extend to the nearby Cinema Troisi.

A program bridging culture, education, and industry

The strength of Rome Videogame Lab lies in its ability to combine multiple facets into a single four-day program:

  • Educational Area: meetings, conferences, and courses on the conscious use of technology and video games;
  • Educational Workshops: activities featuring Minecraft and Roblox aimed at children and teenagers, with hundreds of participants;
  • Indie Show: a showcase for independent Italian development studios, featuring the latest playable productions;
  • Gaming Areas: a Mario Kart track, racing simulators, and stations for all ages;
  • Esports tournaments and entertainment, such as chiptune music performances.

Talks, guests, and international reach

The festival calendar features thematic talks with authors, developers, and scholars, joined by international guests thanks to the collaboration with the Italian Trade Agency. A B2B area also connects Italian video game companies with national and international buyers, while students from academies and technical institutes find opportunities for training and professional guidance. It is this dual nature—popular and industrial—that sets Rome Videogame Lab apart in the gaming event landscape.

An event for the whole family

Thanks to free admission and a wide variety of offerings, Rome Videogame Lab is designed for a broad audience: families with children, passionate young people, the curious, and industry insiders. Booking is generally required for talks and workshops to ensure the best experience for everyone. It is a chance to experience video games firsthand, in the heart of Rome and the Lazio Region.
