About Tambourine Festival

For five days, the Pigneto district becomes Rome's capital of frame drums: the Tambourine Festival brings together masters, musicians, dancers, and instrument makers at the Circolo ARCI Pianeta Sonoro to explore the rhythms of Southern Italy, Sicily, and Salento, with forays into the Brazilian pandeiro. Featuring daytime specialized workshops, live concerts, dance parties, and shared dinners, this is a participatory event where you learn by playing and always end by dancing together.

A festival dedicated to frame drums in the heart of Pigneto

The Tambourine Festival is a Roman event entirely dedicated to the tambourine and, more broadly, to frame drums—the instruments that have accompanied the folk music and dances of Southern Italy for centuries. It takes place at the Circolo ARCI Pianeta Sonoro, located at Via Casilina 196/A in the Pigneto district of Rome, one of the most vibrant hubs of independent cultural life in the capital and the Lazio region.

The initiative was born from the meeting between Pianeta Sonoro, a social promotion association and percussion school active in the neighborhood for years, and the Obà Obà Cultural Association, which has long promoted similar events in Campania related to the tammorra. The result is an appointment that goes beyond simple concerts, building five intense days of training, listening, dance, and conviviality.

Workshops: the core of the event

The heart of the festival lies in the specialized workshops, open both to those who already play and those approaching the instrument for the first time. The seminars cover the great rhythmic families of the traditional Italian repertoire: pizzica and the tarantellas of Salento, Sicilian rhythms, tammurriate, and Campanian drums, as well as modern tambourine techniques developed in recent decades. There is also an international perspective, with sessions dedicated to the Brazilian pandeiro, an overseas cousin of the Mediterranean tambourine.

  • Basic and advanced frame drum techniques
  • Traditional rhythms of Southern Italy, Sicily, and Salento
  • International percussion, particularly the Brazilian pandeiro
  • Workshops on the relationship between percussion and folk dance

Workshop spots are limited and booking is mandatory: those coming from outside Rome should act well in advance, as the most popular modules fill up quickly.

Concerts, dance parties, and evenings

The evenings change the pace. After hours of study, the club transforms into a dance hall with live concerts by folk music groups and dance parties, the moment when the community of drummers and dancers gathers without distinction between stage and audience. This is the most authentic dimension of the festival: people dance the pizzica and tarantella until late at night, often accompanied by DJ sets that close the evening.

Exhibitions, meetings, and shared dinners

Alongside the music, the program includes exhibitions by traditional drum makers, a precious opportunity to see the craftsmanship of skins, frames, and jingles up close and to engage directly with the luthiers. There are also cultural meetings and talks on the bond between dance and percussion, and shared dinners that punctuate the days: eating together is as much a part of the project as playing, in line with the club's social vocation.

Why it's worth attending

The tambourine is an instrument that is seemingly simple but technically very rich, linked to ritual and festive repertoires that are still very much alive in many areas of the South. An event like this allows those living in Rome and Lazio to access masters in just a few days whom one would otherwise have to chase down in Salento or Campania, and it offers those coming from outside a complete immersion in a welcoming and informal environment.

Pigneto, with its bars, trattorias, and atmosphere of a regenerated working-class neighborhood, is the ideal setting: the festival naturally extends into the surrounding streets, between a workshop and the evening concert.

Tambourine Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Tambourine Festival took place from May 29 to June 2 at the Circolo ARCI Pianeta Sonoro, on Via Casilina 196/A in Pigneto. Five days of specialized workshops on the frame drums of Southern Italy, Sicily, and Salento, with forays into the Brazilian pandeiro, followed each evening by live concerts and dance parties. The program also included exhibitions of drum makers, meetings on the relationship between dance and percussion, and shared dinners.

Tambourine Festival 2026

From May 29 to June 2, 2026, the Circolo ARCI Pianeta Sonoro in Pigneto hosted five days dedicated to the tambourine, organized together with the Obà Obà Cultural Association. Activities were concentrated mainly in the evening, with opening hours from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, while workshop modules occupied the daytime.

The training path compared traditional techniques of Southern frame drums — Salento pizzica, Sicilian rhythms, Campanian repertoires — with more contemporary approaches to the instrument, also opening up to international percussion with the Brazilian pandeiro. Every evening, folk music concerts and dance parties brought together participants, teachers, and the neighborhood public.
