Two evenings of music and community at the Medieval Fortress of Montecelio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Medieval Fortress of Montecelio is the quintessential symbol of the upper village of Guidonia Montecelio, in the province of Rome, Lazio. Perched atop the hill, the fortification commands a panorama that stretches from the Tiburtine countryside to the Lucretili Mountains and, on clear days, all the way to Rome. For years, access to the monument was restricted; the last public opening dated back to 2019. Rocca in Festa was born from this anticipation, serving as an opportunity to reopen the gates and return the Fortress to its residents.
The event, promoted by the Pro Loco Montecelio in partnership with the municipal administration, takes place over a weekend in mid-July. The heart of the program is in the evening: as the daytime heat fades, the Fortress square comes alive with live music, food stalls, and social gatherings. This is not a large-scale festival, but a village feast in the most authentic sense of the termโbuilt by volunteers and designed for those who live in the village all year round.
Montecelio is one of the two historic cores that, together with Guidonia, make up the current municipality. The center preserves a medieval layout of narrow alleys, stairways, and small squares, with the Fortress acting as an acropolis. A few steps away lies the Rodolfo Lanciani Civic Archaeological Museum, housed in the former convent of San Michele Arcangelo, whose cloister hosts concert series and readings during the summer. Those who climb up for Rocca in Festa find themselves in a setting already dedicated to culture, where historical heritage and summer programming support one another.
The value of Rocca in Festa lies in the harmony between the location and the event: rarely does one have the chance to listen to music inside a medieval fortification in the Tiburtine territory, with the sunset stretching over the plains. The turnout at recent editions has confirmed how much the community values this space and its permanent reopening. For visitors from outside the area, the event is also a pretext to discover a village that remains off the beaten tourist path, despite being less than thirty kilometers from the capital.
The location of Montecelio is perfect for a longer weekend. A short distance away, you will find Tivoli with Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana, the thermal springs of Acque Albule in Bagni de Tivoli, and the trails of the Monti Lucretili Regional Natural Park. The area is also known for the production of extra virgin olive oil from the Cornicolani Mountains and for pinciarelle, a typical local pasta celebrated by a popular autumn festival.
The dates and program for Rocca in Festa are announced by the Pro Loco Montecelio and the channels of the Municipality of Guidonia Montecelio a few weeks in advance. It is advisable to check for updates before traveling, especially regarding the opening hours of the Fortress.
As of the writing of this page, neither the dates nor the program for the 2026 edition of Rocca in Festa at the Medieval Fortress of Montecelio, in the municipality of Guidonia Montecelio (province of Rome, Lazio), have been published.
The reference remains the previous edition, which took place in mid-July with evenings of live music and food within the fortification, promoted by the Pro Loco Montecelio with the support of the municipal administration. It is reasonable to expect a similar format, but until the official announcement arrives, any calendar information should be considered provisional.
Those wishing to attend can follow the event's page and the official municipal channels, where the announcement is usually released in the weeks immediately preceding the event.
By car from Rome: Take the A24 to the Tivoli exit, then the SS5 Tiburtina towards Guidonia and drive up to Montecelio (about 30 km from the Grande Raccordo Anulare). By train: FL2 line from Roma Tiburtina to Tivoli, get off at Guidonia-Montecelio station, then take a local bus or taxi to the upper village.
The historic village has narrow streets and limited access: it is best to leave your car in the parking lots at the foot of the center and walk up to the Fortress. The path is uphill and includes stairs, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
The Pro Loco evenings at the Fortress are traditionally free to enter. For any guided tours of the monument and the Rodolfo Lanciani Civic Archaeological Museum, booking is recommended.
Summer evenings at this altitude can be breezy: a light sweater is useful. The view from the top is worth arriving before sunset.
