Float parades and masked groups through the streets of Rignano Flaminio

The Rignano Carnival is the defining event for Rignano Flaminio, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in northern Lazio, situated along the ancient Via Flaminia. The festival reached its 50th edition in 2024, a milestone celebrated by organizers with a collection of historical photographs from all previous years, intended for a commemorative publication. Few festivals in the Flaminia area can boast such long-standing continuity and such deep roots in the life of the town.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats that winds through the town center. These floats are built in the months leading up to Carnival in local warehouses and garages, involving craftsmanship that combines carpentry, papier-mâché, painting, and mechanics. Alongside the floats, masked groups—often consisting of dozens of costumed participants—accompany each allegory with choreography, music, and short comedic sketches. Satire on current events, fairy tales for children, and references to local life are recurring themes.
The event is managed by the Pro Loco of Rignano Flaminio together with the Due de' Coppe carnival committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Rignano Flaminio. In recent years, the organization has also benefited from the collaboration of Universal Civil Service volunteers and local associations. It is an entirely volunteer-run effort: the Pro Loco emphasizes that the Carnival is the project that most successfully unites the town's youth and elders around a shared tradition.
Carnival is not the only highlight for the Rignano community: the town also celebrates its patronal feast at the end of January and the summer festival Estate Rignanese, featuring shows, tribute concerts, and dance evenings. However, the Carnival remains the moment when the historic center truly comes alive, attracting visitors from neighboring towns in the Flaminia area and the Tiber Valley, from Morlupo to Sant'Oreste, and from Civita Castellana to Magliano Romano.
Visitors from outside the area will find an authentic Carnival, with no tickets and no grandstands: the festival is watched from the sidewalk, right among the local families. It is an excellent opportunity to discover a village in northern Lazio just over forty kilometers from Rome, with its medieval historic center, the Church of San Vincenzo, and a landscape of hills and countryside that marks the transition toward the Viterbo area. It is a February afternoon that tells the story of how local tradition is truly lived in Lazio better than many guidebooks.
The 2026 Rignano Carnival was spread over two days: Sunday, February 15, with the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups through the streets of Rignano Flaminio, and Tuesday, February 17, Shrove Tuesday, the final day with celebrations in the square.
The format followed the established tradition of previous editions, organized by the Pro Loco and the local carnival committee with the patronage of the Municipality: floats built by local groups, masks, music, and confetti, along a route entirely on the street and free to access.
By car: From Rome, take the Via Flaminia (SS3) north for about 40 km, or the A1 motorway, exiting at Magliano Sabina and continuing on the Flaminia. On parade days, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is best to leave your car in the peripheral parking lots and reach the route on foot.
Rignano Flaminio is served by the FL3 Rome-Viterbo railway line, with a station a short distance from the town center.
The float parade takes place on the street and is open to the public free of charge. The start is traditionally set for the early afternoon; it is advisable to check the final times on the official channels of the Pro Loco of Rignano Flaminio and the Municipality in the days leading up to the event.
Wear warm and comfortable clothing, as the parade is followed on foot and outdoors in mid-February. Costumes are more than welcome, even for adults. For those wishing to stay overnight, local accommodation is limited: many visitors choose facilities in Civita Castellana, Morlupo, or the Sabina countryside.
