About Rieti Half Marathon

The Rieti Half Marathon is the road race that brings the Sabine capital to life every spring on Easter Monday. Starting and finishing at the "R. Guidobaldi" Athletics Stadium, it features the classic 21.097 km distance, alongside a 12.2 km medium-distance course and a 5 km fun run open to everyone. The flat, fully paved route winds through the Rieti plain, crossing countryside and cycle paths: a fast course, highly popular with marathon runners in training, organized by Rieti Marathon in the heart of the Lazio region.

A half marathon in the Rieti plain

The Rieti Half Marathon has become a staple of the Lazio running calendar. Hosted by the Municipality of Rieti, the capital of the province of the same name in Lazio, the event was established in 2023 and has quickly become one of the most popular road races in the Sabina area. The meeting point and start are set at the "R. Guidobaldi" Athletics Stadium, a historic facility known to athletics fans worldwide for the international meetings held there.

Three distances for everyone

The event format is designed to welcome both competitive athletes and those running for the pure pleasure of moving. The program includes:

  • Competitive half marathon at the official distance of 21.097 km;
  • Competitive medium-distance course of 12.2 km, ideal for those not yet ready for the 21 km;
  • 5 km fun run, non-competitive, open to families, children, and beginners.

All races start together from the stadium, with a single loop that unfolds across the plain surrounding the capital. The route, described by the organizers as flat and entirely paved, alternates between country roads and cycle paths, crossing the pedestrian bridge over the Velino River—one of the city's landmarks—within the first few meters. It is a fast track, particularly recommended as a test run for spring marathons.

Easter Monday

The choice of date is no coincidence: the Rieti Half Marathon is traditionally run on Easter Monday, when local families head outdoors and the plain fills with day-trippers. The race thus becomes part of a collective celebration, with a relaxed atmosphere and a strong turnout of spectators along the route and in the stadium stands.

Organizers

The event is organized by ASD Runners Rieti, in collaboration with the Rieti Marathon circuit, a very active local group that offers a full calendar of races throughout the year—from the Rieti Medio Tour to the Terminillo Marathon, and from the Lake Salto Ultra Marathon to the Countryside Half Marathon. The Rieti Half Marathon is their flagship spring event.

A capital to discover while running

Rieti is an ideal stop for a long weekend: the medieval old town, the porticoes of the Bishop's Palace, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the Roman bridge over the Velino are just minutes away from the race area. The surrounding territory—the Rieti Holy Valley with the Franciscan sanctuaries of Greccio, Fonte Colombo, La Foresta, and Poggio Bustone—also offers one of the most famous spiritual and naturalistic itineraries in Lazio. Many participants take advantage of the trip to combine the race with a visit to the province.

Why participate

  • Flat and fast route, suitable for chasing a personal best;
  • Affordable entry fees and a format open to non-members for the fun run;
  • Professional timing and results available online;
  • Awards for top finishers, age categories, and the largest teams;
  • Holiday date that makes it easy to participate from outside the region.
