A festival along the Regina Viarum
The Regina Viarum Festival was established in 2026 as a major widespread event dedicated to the Appian Way, the road the Romans called Regina Viarum, the "Queen of Roads." Promoted by the Lazio Region, the festival begins in Rome (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital) and winds for five days along the ancient route to Minturno, crossing the territories and communities that this consular road has united for over two thousand years.
Walks, talks, and tastings
The program alternates between hikes led by certified guides, cultural talks, guided tours, food and wine experiences, and free concerts. The first stage, "Step by Step," starts at 9:00 AM from Porta San Sebastiano in Rome and reaches Santa Maria delle Mole; participants receive a backpack with breakfast and a souvenir of the event. The walk continues in the following days between Fondi and Itri and from Formia to the Archaeological Park of Minturnae.
Music and performance in Roman theaters
Some of the most evocative moments take place in the ancient Roman theaters along the route. At the Roman Theater of Minturnae, on May 23rd, a celebration of folk music and dance features Valentina Ferraiuolo, Nando Citarella and the Tamburi del Vesuvio, the Musici Viatores, and Ninfa Vitale. On May 24th, at the Roman Theater of Terracina, Federico Paciotti presents his show "Rosso: opera rock edition." Cultural meetings in Rome, Latina, and Itri conclude with tastings of wines and typical products from Lazio.

The Regina Viarum Festival involves numerous municipalities in southern Lazio—from Rome to Latina, Fondi, Itri, Formia, Terracina, and Minturno—with a rich calendar of events. All festival activities are free, with many requiring registration or booking due to limited availability.
Regina Viarum Festival — edition 2026
The first edition
From May 21 to 25, 2026, the Appian Way was the protagonist of the first edition of the Regina Viarum Festival, a widespread event promoted by the Lazio Region to celebrate the consular road recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. From Rome to Minturno, five days intertwined hikes, cultural talks, guided tours, tastings, and free concerts, involving the municipalities of Latina, Fondi, Itri, Formia, Terracina, and Minturno.
Among the most appreciated moments were the folk music and dance festival at the Roman Theater of Minturnae and the Federico Paciotti concert in Terracina, along with walks along the ancient paving stones accompanied by certified guides.

Thursday, May 21 — Rome: 9:00 AM "Step by Step," first stage of the walk from Porta San Sebastiano to Santa Maria delle Mole; "Author Flavors" with tastings of wines and typical products of Lazio; 4:00 PM, at the Conference Hall of the Appia Antica Regional Park, talk "The Regina Viarum: history, landscape, and identity between past and present"; 6:00 PM visit to the former Cartiera Latina.
Friday, May 22 — Latina/Fondi: second stage of the walk between Fondi (Ponte del Viceré) and Itri; 6:00 PM meeting at the former Garage Ruspi with tasting of local products.
Saturday, May 23 — Formia/Minturno: third stage from Formia to the Archaeological Park of Minturnae; guided tours in Minturno and the archaeological park; 6:00 PM, at the Roman Theater of Minturnae, folk music and dance festival with Valentina Ferraiuolo, Nando Citarella and the Tamburi del Vesuvio, Musici Viatores, and Ninfa Vitale.
Sunday, May 24 — Terracina: guided tour of the historic center; 6:00 PM, at the Roman Theater, concert "Regina Viarum, the traveler's sound" with Federico Paciotti and his "Rosso: opera rock edition."
Monday, May 25 — Itri/Minturno/Fondi: 11:30 AM final meeting at the Town Hall of Itri; visits, walks, and events dedicated to the enhancement of the territories crossed by the Regina Viarum.

How to get there
The festival starts in Rome at Porta San Sebastiano, easily accessible from the city center.
