About Quarantì Festival

At the end of August, Roccafranca, in the Bassa Bresciana region, rediscovers an almost disappeared cereal: the 'quarantino' corn, so called because it ripens in forty days from sowing, with its small cobs of orange-red grains. From its flour, a dense, protein-rich polenta with an intense flavour is born, the true protagonist of four evenings dedicated to taste, peasant culture, and joy. The Sagra del Quarantì is not just about gastronomy: it is the recovery of an indigenous variety and an agricultural heritage that risked being lost, told through tastings, exhibitions, music, and traditions of the plain between the Oglio river and cultivated fields.

Corn Saved from Oblivion

In the heart of the Bassa Bresciana, the Municipality of Roccafranca (Province of Brescia, Lombardy) dedicates four days at the end of August to a product that tells the agricultural story of the area: 'quarantino' corn. The name derives from its most surprising characteristic, the ability to mature in just forty days from sowing. The cobs are small, the grains a warm orange-red colour, and the flour obtained from it gives life to a polenta rich in protein and with a decisive flavour, very different from industrial polenta.

Why the Festival Was Born

The event, sponsored by the Lombardy Region and the Province of Brescia, was created with a precise objective: to recover and enhance an almost disappeared indigenous variety. The Oglio Nord Park, the Brescia Cereal Institute, Coldiretti Brescia, Confartigianato, and Confagricoltura have rallied around the project, testifying to how much the Festival has become a reference point for the peasant culture of the plain between Brescia and the Oglio river.

Three Souls in One Festival

The Sagra del Quarantì is divided into three complementary strands. There is the food and wine soul, with the stand offering local dishes built around 'quarantino' polenta: from 'manzo all'olio' (beef in oil) to polenta accompanied by traditional Brescians flavours. There is the cultural soul, made up of photographic exhibitions, historical re-enactments, and gatherings of vintage bicycles, motorcycles, and tractors. And there is the entertainment soul, with concerts, dancing evenings, and music for all tastes that liven up the historic centre until late at night.

An End-of-Summer Event

For those visiting the Oltrepò Bresciano and the plain, the Festival is an opportunity to taste a rare product and immerse oneself in an authentically rural atmosphere, where food is the pretext for gathering. The sixteenth edition confirms the formula that has made the event an anticipated appointment on the Lombard summer calendar.

Quarantì Festival — edition 2026

The sixteenth edition of the Quarantì Festival takes place in Roccafranca from Thursday, August 27 to Sunday, August 30, 2026, with four evenings dedicated to Quarantino corn, Bassa Bresciana polenta, peasant culture, and entertainment.

The 16th edition of the Quarantì Festival returns to Roccafranca from August 27 to 30, 2026, confirming the four-evening format that has made the event an anticipated end-of-summer appointment. The official website announces a program "full of taste, tradition, and lots of cheerfulness," built around Quarantino corn and its protein-rich polenta.

As tradition dictates, the Festival unfolds along three lines: the food stand with local dishes, the cultural section with exhibitions and re-enactments, and the evenings of music and dancing in the historic centre of the town.
