The masquerade festival in the Monti Lepini village, held in Piazza Umberto I
The Prossedi Carnival is one of those events that captures the soul of the small towns in inland Lazio better than any guidebook. There are no monumental floats or parades for thousands of spectators: there is a square, Piazza Umberto I, which for a few hours fills up with masked children, parents with cameras in hand, and that festive buzz you only hear in villages a few times a year. The event is organized by the Municipality of Prossedi and is part of the official municipal calendar as a community gathering dedicated to families.
Prossedi is a town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Latina, located on the edge of the Monti Lepini, in that strip of land that acts as a hinge between the Pontine Plain and the Amaseno Valley. The historic center, dominated by the Gabrielli baronial palace, develops around narrow streets that open directly onto Piazza Umberto I, the town's open-air living room. This is where all the festivities are concentrated: the square is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the village, making the event convenient even for those arriving with small children or strollers.
The event is scheduled for late morning, with a meeting time of 10:30 AM and festivities continuing until lunchtime. The formula is the tried-and-tested one of village carnivals: an informal costume parade, entertainment for children, background music, confetti, and traditional seasonal sweets. Participation is free and open, with no reservations or tickets required, and is specifically designed for a family audience.
Carnival is a deeply felt moment throughout the area between the Lepini mountains and the Ciociaria region: many neighboring towns set up allegorical floats, and in some years, Prossedi has participated in regional parades with its own representatives. However, the local version remains intentionally intimate, focusing on the neighborhood dimension rather than the spectacle: it is the children's festival of the village, and this is its hallmark. Visitors from outside will find an authentic opportunity to observe up close how a popular tradition is experienced in a Lazio village, far from the pageantry of the major carnivals.
For visitors, the Carnival morning is also a great excuse to discover Prossedi and its surroundings: the historic center can be visited in a short time, and within a few kilometers, you can reach Roccagorga, Maenza, Priverno with its Fossanova Abbey, and other stops on the Monti Lepini circuit. Free admission and the morning schedule make the event easy to combine with lunch at a local trattoria, where the cuisine remains tied to the products of the Pontine hinterland.
The 2026 edition took place on Sunday, February 8 in Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the village of Prossedi, in the province of Latina. The meeting was scheduled for 10:30 AM and the festivities continued until midday.
The Municipality classified the event as a community gathering specifically dedicated to families: a formula that prioritizes entertainment for children, costumes, and music in the square over the spectacular nature of large parades. Participation was free, with no reservations or tickets required.
