The theatre review of Sassoferrato, featuring big names of Italian prose
The Prose Season of the Sentino Theatre is the most anticipated cultural event of the winter in Sassoferrato, a town in the hinterland of the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. Organized by the Municipality of Sassoferrato, the review takes place between December and April and offers a programme that combines comedy, drama, and civil theatre, featuring some of the most well-known performers on the Italian stage.
The heart of the event is the historic Sentino Theatre, a welcoming venue with excellent acoustics, named after the Sentino river that flows nearby. Despite its small size, the theatre attracts an audience from all over the district: in recent editions, almost a quarter of the spectators came from municipalities other than Sassoferrato, a sign of its appeal that extends beyond city limits.
The established format includes five subscription shows, complemented by events for younger audiences and musical concerts. Over the years, performers such as Massimo Dapporto, Vanessa Gravina, Biagio Izzo, Gioele Dix, Tiziana Foschi, Rosita Celentano, Maddalena Crippa, Carlo Buccirosso, and Alessandro Benvenuti have graced the Sentino stage, testifying to the quality of a programme that is on par with theatres in major cities.
The Prose Season is one of the most solid realities in the Marche theatre scene: recent editions have recorded near sell-out occupancy rates and a constantly growing number of subscribers. Alongside the review, the Municipality runs a Municipal Theatre School that trains dozens of young students each year, confirming a cultural investment that looks to the future.
Those who hold a subscription or ticket for one of the season's shows benefit from discounts on admission or on the Museum Card for Sassoferrato's museums, an additional opportunity to discover the rich artistic heritage of this village, the birthplace of the famous painter Giovan Battista Salvi, known as «il Sassoferrato».
The 17th Prose Season of the Sentino Theatre in Sassoferrato confirmed its great success, with an average attendance of 99.36% of capacity and nearly a quarter of the audience coming from other municipalities. Alongside the five subscription titles, the programme included three shows for younger audiences and two concerts, plus the usual showcase of the Municipal Theatre School in May. Organized by the Municipality of Sassoferrato, the edition concluded on April 10, 2026, with a comedy by Biagio Izzo.
