The Procession of the Dead Christ is the culminating moment of Holy Week in Gubbio, in the Province of Perugia. It takes place on the evening of Good Friday and is a centuries-old tradition preserved by the Confraternity of Santa Croce della Foce, deeply rooted in the city's spirituality.
The Procession
The procession starts from the Church of Santa Croce della Foce and crosses the historic center following the ancient itinerary, with the effigy of the Dead Christ carried on shoulders. The procession unfolds in a climate of recollection, with few ritual stops, showing the Christ for the veneration of monasteries, convents, and confraternities.
The Miserere and the Songs of the Passion
The emotional heart of the procession is the singing of the Miserere and the Songs of the Passion, which accompany the procession through the dark streets of the city in an atmosphere of intense participation. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to experience the most authentic and spiritual dimension of Gubbio's tradition, which during Holy Week also includes other rites such as the Exposition of the Dead Christ and the Deposition of the Crucifix.
Procession of the Dead Christ — edition 2026
The Procession of the Dead Christ 2026 took place on Good Friday, April 3, according to the centuries-old tradition of Gubbio. The procession departed at 7:30 PM from the Church of Santa Croce della Foce, heading towards the 'pietrone' along the ancient historical itinerary, with stops at the pietrone and at the 'Toschi Mosca' nursing home.
The Dead Christ was shown for the veneration of monasteries, convents, and confraternities, while the singing of the Miserere and the Songs of the Passion accompanied the procession's passage. The Holy Week rites also included the Exposition of the Dead Christ and, on Holy Saturday, the repositioning of the Crucifix.
