About Cristo Morto Norcia

Every Good Friday, Norcia relives the Passion of Christ with one of Central Italy's most spectacular representations. In the afternoon, the Lament of the Madonna by Jacopone da Todi takes place; in the evening, by the sole light of torches, the Procession of the Dead Christ winds along the city walls, forming a heart shape, with hundreds of costumed participants, living pictures of the Via Crucis, chained penitents, and the rhythmic roll of drums.

Good Friday in Norcia

The Procession of the Dead Christ is the most intense moment of Holy Week in Norcia, a town in the Valnerina, province of Perugia. A tradition deeply felt by the Nursina community, which every year transforms the historic center into a grand open-air sacred representation.

The Lament of the Madonna

The day opens in the afternoon with the performance of the Lament of the Madonna by Jacopone da Todi, one of the oldest dramatic laude in Italian literature, staged by the local theater company in the square of the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, in the Capolaterra district.

The procession along the walls

In the evening, the actual procession begins, winding along the city walls of Norcia along a route that forms the shape of a heart. Illuminated only by the light of torches, accompanied by the roll of drums, the dragging of chains by penitents, and hushed chants, the parade brings together hundreds of costumed participants: Roman soldiers on horseback, devout women in black, chained penitents, and the crowd following Jesus towards Calvary.

The living pictures

Along the route, living pictures are set up, tableaux vivants that reproduce with solemn immobility the stations of the Via Crucis: from Judas' betrayal to Jesus before Pilate, from the falls to the encounter with Veronica, up to the crucifixion and deposition. The event, fully revived after the 2016 earthquake, was born from the idea of Don Armando Petrelli together with Anna Ferrari and Liliana Altavilla and is carried on today by Nursina volunteers.
