The Pro Loco Christmas in Giarre
The Pro Loco Giarre Christmas Competitions have become a staple of the holiday season in the town of Giarre, in the Province of Catania, the heart of the Ionian-Etna hinterland. Organized by Pro Loco Giarre Aps in collaboration with the municipal administration, the competitions engage citizens, families, schools, and businesses every year, turning the Advent period into an opportunity for collective participation and the celebration of local Christmas traditions.
The Various Contests
The event is divided into several distinct competitions, each aimed at a different audience:
- Decorate the Most Beautiful Tree — reserved for families decorating their own Christmas tree.
- The Most Beautiful Nativity Scene of the Giarre Family — dedicated to the nativity scenes set up in local homes, following one of the most deeply rooted Sicilian Christmas traditions.
- Christmas in the Shop Window — reserved for merchants, rewarding the most evocative displays in the city center and surrounding hamlets like Trepunti.
- The Tradition of the Nativity Scene in the Ionian-Etna Hinterland — aimed at elementary and middle school students in the district, with two sections dedicated to drawings and creative projects.
A Highly Anticipated Awards Ceremony
The highlight is the awards ceremony, traditionally held in mid-January in the prestigious Salone degli Specchi of the Giarre Town Hall. City authorities, including the Mayor and the President of the Pro Loco, attend the ceremony to present the awards, highlighting the community value of the initiative.
A Widespread Christmas
The competitions are part of a broader calendar of Christmas events promoted by the Giarre Pro Loco, which also offers shows, cultural initiatives, and gastronomic appointments throughout the holidays. The goal is to bring Giarre and its territory to life during the period from December 8th to Epiphany, strengthening the bond between the community and its roots.

Winners of the 2025-2026 edition
The awards ceremony, hosted in the Salone degli Specchi of Giarre, saw the presentation of awards in the presence of Mayor Leo Cantarella and Pro Loco President Salvo Zappalà.
- Decorate the Most Beautiful Tree: 1st Francesco Calì, 2nd Elisea Giuffrida, 3rd Vera Guarrera.
- The Most Beautiful Nativity Scene of the Giarre Family: 1st Alfia Patanè, 2nd Leonardo Patanè and Maria Concetta Tripodi, 3rd Alfia Campione and Teresa Arena.
- Christmas in the Shop Window: 1st Glemì Bomboniere (Giarre), 2nd Fiori e Fantasie di Raciti Carmela (Trepunti), 3rd Panificio Casa del Pane (Giarre).
- The Tradition of the Nativity Scene in the Ionian-Etna Hinterland — drawing section: 1st the fifth grade class of the Third Comprehensive Institute of Giarre; creative projects section: 1st Simone Nicotra.

The four contests of the edition
For Christmas 2025, the Pro Loco Giarre competitions were divided into four categories:
- Decorate the Most Beautiful Tree (families)
- The Most Beautiful Nativity Scene of the Giarre Family (families)
- Christmas in the Shop Window (merchants)
- The Tradition of the Nativity Scene in the Ionian-Etna Hinterland (elementary and middle schools, drawing and creative project sections)
The competitions took place during the December 2025 holidays, with the awards ceremony on January 15-16, 2026 in the Salone degli Specchi of the Town Hall.
