The festival celebrating the Greek roots of Eastern Sicily in Giardini-Naxos
Primavere Elleniche is a cultural festival held in Giardini-Naxos, in the province of Messina, dedicated to celebrating the deep Greek roots of Eastern Sicily. The town stands on the site where Naxos, the island's first Greek colony, was founded in 734 BC: a historical milestone that makes this stretch of the Ionian coast a symbolic place for reflecting on the Mediterranean's Hellenic legacy.
The festival weaves together history, archaeology, food and wine culture, and cultural diplomacy, with the Museum of the Sea of Giardini Naxos as its primary hub and the Naxos Taormina Archaeological Park playing a central role. The event was born from a broader initiative of twinning with Greece, particularly with the island of Naxos and Chalkida, the homeland of the Euboean colonists who founded the island's Chalcidian cities.
A key focus of the event is the consolidation of the Regional Network of Chalcidian Cities of Sicily, which brings together centers of Hellenic origin founded by colonists from Chalkida in Euboea: Naxos (Giardini-Naxos), Messina, Catania, Lentini, and Carlentini. The goal is to develop shared strategies that, building on these common historical roots, enhance archaeological heritage and attract high-quality cultural tourism.
Primavere Elleniche features meetings with archaeologists and scholars, the awarding of honorary citizenships to prominent figures from the Hellenic world, choral concerts, and in-depth discussions on the millennial relationship between Sicily and Greece. The days are filled with round tables, cultural and theatrical presentations, and musical performances hosted in iconic local venues, from the Museum of the Sea to the town's historic churches.
Overlooking the gulf at the foot of Taormina, Giardini-Naxos is now one of Sicily's most popular seaside resorts, yet it preserves the traces of its Greek colonial past within its archaeological park, including ancient walls, sanctuaries, and the altar of Apollo Archegetes. Primavere Elleniche invites residents and visitors alike to rediscover this ancient identity, transforming the territory into a cultural bridge between East and West.
The 2026 edition of Primavere Elleniche was held in Giardini-Naxos on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, with the Museum of the Sea as the main venue and the Naxos Taormina Archaeological Park among the key locations.
On Friday, April 17, at 4:30 PM at the Museum of the Sea, the day opened with the meeting "Thalassa. Stories of seas, peoples, and encounters" and the awarding of honorary citizenship of Giardini-Naxos to Prof. Nikolaos Stampolidis, Director General of the Acropolis Museum in Athens. In the evening, at 7:15 PM, the "Armonia" Choir of Thessaloniki, conducted by maestro Nikolaos Kyriakou, performed at the Church of Maria SS. Immacolata.
On Saturday, April 18, starting at 5:00 PM, the meeting "The future has an ancient heart" explored the Hellenic Community of the Strait, featuring the presentation of the historical re-enactment of the Foundation of Naxos and the "Marenostrum DIKE" theatrical project.
Events are primarily held at the Museum of the Sea in Giardini-Naxos (ME) and the Naxos Taormina Archaeological Park, with some sessions hosted in the churches of the town center.
By car: A18 Messina-Catania motorway, take the Giardini-Naxos/Taormina exit. By train: Taormina-Giardini station on the Messina-Catania-Syracuse line, connected to the town center by local buses. By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, approximately 60 km away.
Cultural meetings are generally free to attend; for concerts and visits to the Archaeological Park, it is recommended to check details and schedules with the Municipality of Giardini-Naxos.
