Prayer Vigil for Vocations and the Clergy (Saint John Lateran)

A vigil in the spiritual heart of Rome

The Prayer Vigil for Vocations and the Clergy takes place in the Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome and the mother of all churches, located in Rome, Lazio. It is one of the most intense spiritual events of the Roman spring: an evening of reflection that brings together young people, seminarians, religious, priests, and the faithful to pray together for vocations and for those who have already answered the call to the priesthood.

Organizers

The initiative is promoted by the Dicastery for the Clergy in collaboration with the Diocese of Rome, the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and the National Office for Vocations Pastoral Care of the Italian Episcopal Conference. The liturgy is organized by the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, a sign of the deep bond between the vigil and the formation journey of the future priests of the Diocese of Rome.

The bond with Good Shepherd Sunday

The vigil precedes Good Shepherd Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter, the day on which the Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In Rome, this period also coincides with the priestly ordinations of the new diocesan priests: the vigil thus serves as the first major community moment of preparation, an invitation addressed especially to young people to pause, listen, and entrust themselves to let God's call flourish.

The music of Monsignor Marco Frisina

The sonic heart of the evening is the Choir of the Diocese of Rome, directed by maestro Monsignor Marco Frisina, one of the most renowned contemporary composers of sacred music. His chants accompany the moments of adoration, listening to the Word, and silence, creating an atmosphere of prayer that envelops the entire Lateran nave.

An event for the city

Open to all with free admission, the vigil is designed as an annual appointment that offers the Christian community of Rome a powerful moment of sharing. Participants experience not only a liturgical celebration but also a cultural and spiritual journey within the extraordinary context of the Lateran Basilica, with its artistic heritage, the statues of the Apostles, and the millennial history of the Pope's cathedral.
