Ferragosto in the Phlegraean Fields with live music, maritime traditions, and bluefish at the Darsena

The Pozzuoli Inn...Fest is the event through which the Municipality of Pozzuoli, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, celebrates the heart of summer. For four days around August 15th, the Darsena—the ancient fishermen's port—transforms into a large open-air stage overlooking the gulf, featuring a mix of concerts, shows, folk traditions, and seafood cuisine. This is not an elite event; it is a free, deeply popular city festival designed for both locals and the visitors who flock to the Phlegraean Fields in August.
The main stage is set up at Piazza a Mare, in the Darsena area, complete with sound and lighting systems, facilities, stewards, and night security. This location is far from accidental: the Darsena is where Pozzuoli preserves its maritime identity most intact, with moored boats, fish shops, and the silhouette of the Rione Terra dominating the scene from above. During the festival evenings, the public gathers across the square, the docks, and the tables of local venues, creating an atmosphere of a village feast brought to the sea.
The most iconic moment of the entire event is the Pennone a Mare, also known as the Soap Pole, which takes place on Ferragosto on the Molo Caligoliano. The competition involves traversing a fifteen-meter pole, tilted over the water and made extremely slippery with grease, to grab one of the three flags hoisted at the top. Competitors—often local fishermen and youths—almost always end up in the sea to the laughter and applause of the crowd. The first written record of the race dates back to 1886, but collective memory traces it back much further: it is a ritual that unites the city's maritime vocation with devotion to the Assumption, the patron saint of Pozzuoli, whose religious feast falls on August 15th.
Alongside the music, the festival showcases local gastronomy. Restaurants, pizzerias, and bars in the Darsena offer menus and specialties based on bluefish, aptly defined as the "gold of the Phlegraean Fields": anchovies, sardines, and mackerel become the stars of fried dishes, cuoppi of anchovies, and traditional Phlegraean recipes to be enjoyed while strolling along the docks. Pozzuoli Inn...Fest also serves as a preview of Azzurro Pozzuoli, the autumn festival entirely dedicated to bluefish that the Municipality organizes at the end of September.
The established formula alternates a main concert with various performances each evening. Recent editions have featured artists from the Neapolitan scene and names in Neapolitan song and jazz, alongside performance companies mixing music, theater, and visual acrobatics. The Ferragosto evening traditionally closes with fireworks over the Darsena waters, one of the most photographed moments of the Pozzuoli summer. Admission to the shows is free: the event is promoted and funded by the Municipal Administration of Pozzuoli, with operational management entrusted to an external entity specializing in events and tourism.
Attending the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most layered cities in Campania. A few steps from the Darsena are the Flavian Amphitheater, the third largest in Italy, the Macellum—the so-called Temple of Serapis—and the Rione Terra, the acropolis of the Roman colony of Puteoli, now reopened to the public with an underground archaeological route. Surrounding the area are the Phlegraean Fields, with the Solfatara, Lake Avernus, the Archaeological Park of Cuma, and the ferry terminals for Procida and Ischia: a context that makes Ferragosto at the Darsena a natural stop for a longer stay.

Those planning a visit to the Darsena in August can refer to the established structure of the event: four evenings of free concerts at Piazza a Mare, the Pennone a Mare on August 15th on the Molo Caligoliano, fireworks over the port, and food stalls dedicated to the bluefish of the Phlegraean Fields. It is recommended to verify information on the Municipality's official channels before organizing your trip.
