Folk music in Piazza Mario Pagano
The Potenza Folk Festival is one of the most beloved musical events in the Lucanian capital: three evenings of free concerts in Piazza Mario Pagano, the city's main square, during the days when Potenza celebrates its patron saint, San Gerardo. Founded to intertwine popular music and religious tradition, the festival is organized by the association I Portatori del Santo and is now a fixed event in the Maggio Potentino calendar.
The artistic offering ranges from Celtic folk to Mediterranean tarantellas, from world music to singer-songwriter tunes, up to nationally renowned pop and rap artists. Every year the square fills with an audience: free admission and the quality of the programming have made the festival capable of attracting tens of thousands of spectators on peak evenings.
The festival combines names from the folk and popular scene with more "pop" guests, creating a lineup that appeals to different generations. Alongside the concerts, the event features the Cantina del Portatore, with local food and wine specialties, transforming the evenings into a collective celebration that blends music, food, and socialising.
Its placement during the San Gerardo festivities is no coincidence: the festival is an integral part of the patronal celebrations and ideally dialogues with the Storica Parata dei Turchi (Historical Parade of the Turks) and the Corteo del Santo (Procession of the Saint), contributing to making late May the most intense period of the year in Potenza.
Promoted by I Portatori del Santo with the support of the Municipality of Potenza, the Potenza Folk Festival has become in just a few years a symbol of the renewed cultural vitality of the capital of the Province of Potenza. For those visiting Basilicata in late May, it is the ideal opportunity to experience the city at the height of its most heartfelt celebration.
The fourth edition of the Potenza Folk Festival takes place from May 26th to 28th, 2026 in Piazza Mario Pagano, with free admission. The lineup alternates major names in international and Italian folk with pop and singer-songwriter guests, culminating in the headliner of the final evening, Carl Brave.
The Cantina del Portatore is also present, featuring the flavors of Lucanian tradition, to complete the festive atmosphere during the San Gerardo celebrations.
How to get there: Piazza Mario Pagano is located in the historic center of Potenza, easily reachable on foot from the city center and via the escalators connecting the lower part of the city.
Tickets: Free admission to all concerts.
Accommodation: Hotels and B&Bs are available in the center of Potenza, a short distance from the square.
