The historic carnival of Piumazzo with the grand parade of allegorical floats
The Piumazzo Children's Carnival is one of the most cherished events of winter in Emilia-Romagna. It takes place in the hamlet of Piumazzo, within the territory of the Municipality of Castelfranco Emilia, in the province of Modena, and its roots go back to the early seventies. Over the decades, it has become a landmark for families in the area, capable of attracting thousands of visitors with each edition.
The heart of the event is the grand parade of allegorical floats that winds through the streets and squares of the hamlet. The floats, created with months of work by local carnival groups and societies, present different themes each year inspired by fairy tales, cartoons, mythology, and current events. Along the route, there is the traditional toss of candies and gadgets, masks, music, and entertainment that engage both adults and children.
As the name itself suggests, it is primarily a carnival dedicated to the younger generation: alongside the floats, there are walking groups and costumed children, while areas dedicated to carousels and inflatable attractions make the day a festive occasion for the whole family. The atmosphere is typical of Emilian village carnivals: popular, cheerful, and deeply communal.
During the festival days, food stands operate where you can taste specialties of Emilian cuisine, starting with the unmissable gnocco fritto (fried dumplings) served with local cured meats, a symbol of Modenese conviviality.
The importance of this event has been officially recognized by the Municipal Council of Castelfranco Emilia, which has declared the Piumazzo Children's Carnival a cultural heritage of historical and symbolic value for the community. This recognition celebrates over half a century of volunteer work, passion, and popular tradition preserved by the San Giacomo Parish and local carnival groups.
The carnival is spread over two Sundays during the Carnival period, between February and March depending on the year. The parades start in the early afternoon and enliven the hamlet until sunset. Admission is free.
The 2026 edition, the 55th in its history, took place on the two Sundays of February 15 and 22 in the hamlet of Piumazzo, Castelfranco Emilia. A great public success, with over 10,000 total attendees from Modena and the entire Emilia-Romagna region.
Starting at 2:15 PM on both Sundays, 11 allegorical floats with themes inspired by fairy tales, cartoons, and mythology paraded through the hamlet's streets, along with 2 walking groups. Among the floats: The Enchanted Forest, Alice's Fantasies, The Gods of Olympus, Our Fairy Tales, and many others.
