Float parades and masquerades in the city of tuff
The Pitigliano Carnival is one of the most cherished winter traditions in the Tuscan Maremma. Every year, in the town of Pitigliano (Grosseto), the streets of the Zona Nuova and the charming historic center carved into the tuff rock fill with color, music, and joy, thanks to float parades and masquerades that delight both adults and children alike.
The heart of the event lies in the float parades, which start at Piazza Nenni and wind through the town streets, accompanied by masked groups, music, and entertainment. The floats, crafted with care and creativity, bring satire, fantasy, and tradition to the streets in a festive atmosphere designed for all ages. The parades conclude at Piazza Nenni with a final celebration, serving as a moment of gathering for locals and visitors.
Beyond the parades, the program offers numerous side events:
Organized by the Pitigliano Carnival Association with the support of the local municipality, the Carnival is a highly anticipated event that unites the local community and attracts visitors eager to discover one of Tuscany's most fascinating villages. The unique setting of Pitigliano, with its tuff houses overlooking the valley, makes this popular festival a special opportunity to experience the Maremma carnival tradition.
The 2026 Pitigliano Carnival spanned several days, featuring grand balls and massive float parades. On the Sundays of February 8 and 15, the floats departed at 2:00 PM from Piazza Nenni, while on Tuesday, February 17, the parade started at 2:30 PM, with an additional event scheduled for Sunday, February 22.
The edition introduced significant new features: a new route in the Zona Nuova, mini floats, and a photo contest for the best costumes. Side events included street food, bouncy castles, and the 2026 Carnival Lottery, with the draw held on Tuesday, February 17, and a cruise for two as the top prize. The event concluded in Piazza Nenni with a final celebration.
Pitigliano can be reached by car via the SS74 Maremmana; the nearest train station is Albinia, which is connected by bus. Parades start from Piazza Nenni and cover the Zona Nuova and the historic center.
The event takes place during the Carnival season, between late January and February, with main parades held on Sunday and Tuesday afternoons.
Participation in the street parades is free. The Carnival lottery requires the purchase of tickets.
